Excerpt from Centennial Discourse: A History of the First Congregational Church, Haverhill, N. H Amongst the many forces which have wrought during the past century in the wonderful progress and civiliza tion of our country, the foremost place must be assigned the Christian church. Without entering into a discussion of the general proposition, it will be my chief purpose on the present occasion to give a sketch of this church and trace its influence on the moral and religious welfare of this community. Like every other Christian church its lines of light and power have extended far beyond those who are the object of its more immediate care - its good and noble work going forward wherever any of its mem bers maintain a living Christian faith and example. Its chief labor is here; it has also a part in the general mould ing of the nation's moral life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
