Excerpt from Catalogue of the Private Library of Mr. Adolph Lewisohn The collection of manuscripts is a very interesting one, including specimens of various schools and countries, well illustrating the art of manuscript illumination. Beginning with an early Thirteenth Century Psalter, on vellum, of the characteristic curious workmanship of the period; and an equally old vellum Psalter of curious German workmanship; and ranging through various periods we find an interesting manuscript in Arabic; an ancient Hebrew Cabalistic manuscript on vellum; several fine old illuminated examples of the Book of Esther written in Hebrew characters; two splendid Horae on vellum, with beautiful large miniatures; Martial's Epigrams, an Italian manuscript on the finest thin white vellum; a rare manuscript Mochsor in Hebrew characters; two Persian manuscripts with a large number of miniatures beautifully executed in gold and colors; an early rubricated Seneca; and continuing down to a Nineteenth Century Spanish manuscript on vellum, relating to heraldry. These fine examples are all illuminated and decorated or rubricated, and are all in an excellent state of preservation. Incunabula The collection is rich in early printed books, and Incunabula, or books printed in the half century following the invention of printing, are well represented. It is gratifying to find that the earliest was printed in Mainz, from which place printing spread through Germany to Italy. The splendid copy of Cicero's Officis was printed in Mainz in 1466 by Johannes Fust and Petrus de Gernsshem, the former of whom is supposed to have shared in the invention of printing with Gutenberg. Like music, art is a universal language.
