Excerpt from Catalogue of the Noctuidae: In the Collection of the British Museum The subject of Vol. XII. of the 'Catalogue of Moths' is the classification of part of the Noctuid subfamily Catocalin . The remaining portion of the subfamily, together with the small subfamilies Monn and Phytomaltrin, will appear in Vol. XIII., in which the "Key to the Genera" and the "Phylogeny of the Catocalin " will be reprinted. The Catoealin are represented in the present volume by 63 genera and 643 species, and are characterized as follows: - Vein 5 of the hind wing is fully developed and arises from close to the lower angle of the cell; the eyes are smooth and not overhung by "cilia"; the mid tibiae are always spined, and the fore and hind tibiae may also be similarly armed. The subfamily is a modification of the great Quadrifid section of the Noctuid, many of its most divergent types having close parallels in the very large subfamily Noctuin, which will be classified immediately after the Phytometrin it is fairly evenly distributed in the temperate and tropical Zones, but has few Arctic or Alpine forms. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Noctuidae in the Collection of the British Museum, Vol. 9 The subject of Vol. IX. of the 'Catalogue of Moths' is the third and final part of the very large Noctuid subfamily Acronyctin; it contains 725 species belonging to 185 genera as compared with 843 species belonging to 96 genera in Vol. VII., and 720 species belonging to 104 genera in Vol. VIII. The comparatively short list of unrecognised species belonging to the subfamily, at the end of the Volume, is evidence of the ready help given to Sir George Hampson by the loan of types and specimens by Entomologists interested in the subject. A large proportion of the species included in this list were described by the older authors and the types are lost. Plate CXLVIII. will appear with Vol. X. of the Catalogue.
