In 1853 he returned to Dusseldorf and entered the Academy there; afterward he also studied in Rome, Switzerland, and Germany. Elected a member of the National Academy in 1860, and later appointed Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, France. In 1867 he was sent to Europe Upon a government commission, to make studies for a painting of the Discovery of the North River by Hendrik Hudson.
