Difference between Gaming and Gambling-Universality and Antiquity of Gambling-Isis and Osiris-Games and Dice of the Egyptians-China and India-The Jews-Among the Greeks and Romans-Among Mahometans-Early Dicing-Dicing in England in the 13th and 14th Centuries-In the 17th Century-Celebrated Gamblers-Bourchier-Swiss Anecdote-Dicing in the 18th Century. Gaming is derived from the Saxon word Gamen, meaning joy, pleasure, sports, or gaming-and is so interpreted by Bailey, in his Dictionary of 1736; whilst Johnson gives Gamble-to play extravagantly for money, and this distinction is to be borne in mind in the perusal of this book; although the older term was in use until the invention of the later-as we see in Cotton's Compleat Gamester (1674), in which he gives the following excellent definition of the word: -"Gaming is an enchanting witchery, gotten between Idleness and Avarice: an itching disease, that makes some scratch the head, whilst others, as if they were bitten by a Tarantula, are laughing themselves to death; or, lastly, it is a paralytical distemper, which, seizing the arm, the man cannot chuse but shake his elbow.

Hundreds of thousands of works of art and artefacts from many parts of the Pacific are dispersed across European museums. They range from seemingly quotidian things such as fish-hooks and baskets to great sculptures of divinities, architectural forms and canoes. These collections constitute a remarkable resource for understanding history and society across Oceania, cross-cultural encounters since the voyages of Captain Cook, and the colonial transformations that have taken place since. They are also collections of profound importance for Islanders today, who have varied responses to their disp.

In recent years, landscape has become increasingly recognised as a topic of central importance to a wide variety of disciplines. To a large degree this recognition has been based upon an expanding appreciation of the political aspects of landscape, its ideological character and effects. Landscapes and Politics is an innovative cross-disciplinary volume of new writing which brings together, in a strategic and productive encounter, a broad variety of critical work currently being done in this field. With 28 papers and five photo essays. Landscapes and Politics presents material by scholars and practitioners from anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art history, cultural studies, English and American literature, film studies, fine art, geography, history, landscape architecture, philosophy, political science, and religious studies. As an important marker of current methodologies, research and practice across these different disciplinary areas Landscapes and Politics is an invaluable resource. It will be of interest to all those concerned with current discourses and debates on landscape and its representation.
