Ever since hamsters arrived in the United States in the 1950s, they have topped the list as America’s favorite critter. Hailed as “the ultimate pocket pet,” hamsters are “small, cute, fuzzy, clean, and easy to care for,” in the words of author Virginia Parker Guidry. Filled with terrific color photographs, this Complete Care Made Easy Hamsters encapsulates all the virtues of these flawless little mammals and gives owners practical advice about how to better understand them and properly care for them. Deciding to add a hamster to one’s household is the subject of the chapter “The Right Choice,” which discusses the virtues of these easy-to-tame children’s pets and the commitment they require. The chapter “Locating a Healthy Hamster” offers solid advice about selecting the right pet, where to purchase or adopt, and whether two (or three) is better than one. Two complete chapters on the hamster’s homecoming offer the reader excellent advice about acclimating the new pet to the home, selecting the best cage, accessories, setting up the hamster’s habitat, and finding a good vet. In “Life with a Hamster,” the author discusses the hamster’s nocturnal nature, various physical behaviors, temperature requirements, handling, and basic husbandry. The hamster’s feeding requirements are discussed in “Dinnertime!” which outlines the ideal diet of dry mix, fresh foods, and occasional treats. Sidebars about common poisonous items, including certain people food and household productions, are requisite reading for all hamster keepers. Preventive care is discussed in the chapter “The Healthy Hamster,” along with common health concerns (such as colds, wet tail, abscesses, etc.) and breeding. The final chapter “Hamster Fun” explores games, toys, activities, and showing. The appendix includes lists of clubs, organizations, and websites. Glossary of terms and index included.

Everything around the hamster ★ A compact hamster counselor, who provides an overview of the individual races, their differences and characteristics points out and summarizes, how one holds and maintains, feeds and employs the hamster as a loner correctly. ★ You wonder which hamster suits me? How big should the cage be? Which basic equipment is necessary? The right equipment to make the hamster feel comfortable is summarized in the most important points. Since hamsters are not allowed to eat many plants and food, as these are poisonous or even life-threatening for the animals, a summarized, compact list is also given. So that you can get to know your animal better, the most essential interpretations of the hamster's body language are also explained. The most important diseases of the hamster are also described. However, this list is not intended to replace a visit to the vet, but to create a possibility to recognize changes and abnormalities more quickly, and thus to be able to react immediately.

Passed by Congress in 1966, the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) sets general standards for humane care and treatment that must be provided for certain animals that are bred for commercial sale, sold sight unseen (Internet sales), exhibited to the public, used in biomedical research, or transported commercially. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has published the Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations, known as the "Blue Book," as a tool to improve compliance among our licensees and registrants and to enhance the consistency of inspections by our field inspectors. The Blue Book consolidates into one source the AWA and the applicable regulations and standards. These regulations must be followed by those responsible for the care and handling of animals, including farmers. In addition, animal activists, lawyers, American citizens, zoologists, wildlife rehabilitator specialists, veterinarians, pet care and grooming organizations and their staff, other animal caretakers,USDA employees, and students pursuing research for essays and papers relating to animal rights and care may be interested in these regulations. John Sonego and his partner, Michael, had always wanted to start a family. Little did they know they would become the fathers of not one, not two, but three precious boys. My Three Sons shares the heartwarming true story of this incredible family. Born to a drug-addicted mother and taken from her after a string of arrests, the three biological brothers come to their new home to begin a new life. With John and Michaels unconditional love and acceptance, the five became an instant family, learning to lean on each other for the support and devotion only a family can give. Poignant and funny, heartbreaking and inspiring, My Three Sons recounts one familys life and reaffirms the transformative power of love in childrens lives. This is the story of five very lucky people, three brothers and the two men who raise them. The story of how this family came to be is inspirational but its more than that. It reminds us of one simple and powerful truth that in raising children, it is often difficult to determine who is the teacher and who is the student. Johns journey is proof that in parenting you get as much as you give. Joan Garry, former executive director of GLAAD, activist, and parent

A girl's friendship with a lonely black hole leads her to face her own sadness in this original, funny, and touching middle grade novel for fans of Crenshaw and Flora & Ulysses. When eleven-year-old Stella Rodriguez shows up at NASA to request that her recording be included in Carl Sagan's Golden Record, something unexpected happens: A black hole follows her home, and sets out to live in her house as a pet. The black hole swallows everything he touches, which is challenging to say the least—but also turns out to be a convenient way to get rid of those items that Stella doesn't want around. Soon the ugly sweaters her aunt has made for her all disappear within the black hole, as does the smelly class hamster she's taking care of, and most important, all the reminders of her dead father that are just too painful to have around. It's not until Stella, her younger brother, Cosmo, the family puppy, and even the bathroom tub all get swallowed up by the black hole that Stella comes to realize she has been letting her own grief consume her. And that's not the only thing she realizes as she attempts to get back home. This is an astonishingly original and funny adventure with a great big heart.
