Excerpt from Camille Desmoulins and His Wife: Passages From the History of the Dantonists This history may then be read with confidence. In it will be found nothing insincere, nothing which is not borne out by facts, based upon a document, or proved by some written evidence, whether already known, or published for the first time in this volume. Our era is that of exactness and of patience in the matter of historic research. It does not boast the lofty flights of genius, but it has at least the virtue of respect for truth; which is, perhaps, the most praiseworthy of virtues, for, to our mind, it leads to all the others. It was no easy task for the author to make up his mind to close this work, which was the joy and the hope of his youth. What bright and happy dreams he had dreamed over it! With what intense pleasure he had turned over the faded yellow papers of the Archives With what emotion he had opened the records of the revolutionary tribunals! With what pain he had watched the falling, one by one, of so many noble and intellectual heads! How he had rejoiced to find in those faded pages the memory and the echo of many glorious days! When the following chapters shall be read, a gloomy contrast must necessarily be drawn between that past and the present, or rather, between the past of eighty years ago and the past of yesterday. How great France then was, soaring above the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX. No. i. Unpublished Fragments Of Camille Desmoulins' Writings. All that comes from the pen of a great writer has a real importance, and especially whatever is left unfinished and can give, not a more perfect, but a more lifelike, idea of him. In certain fragments by political writers, as in a painter's sketches, though barely outlined, we discover the personality, the manner, and, as it were, the peculiar bent of the author's talent. The unpublished fragments which follow are therefore given as sketches. It will be seen in them how Desmoulins 'worked, making orderly notes tabulated as subjects and words, so that the journalist had at his disposal an alphabetical repertory, a portable arsenal of quotations. More than one article merely begun will also be found in these Notes. I have had to select from among them so as not to make my volume too large. The authenticity of these Fragments is indisputable; M. Carteron copied them from Camille s manuscripts, in the possession of Baron Girardot; a piece of good luck by which zee have profited, thanks to the politeness of M. F. Lock, who had these documents from M. Edouard Carteron. Manners of the Romans. Romulus divides the soil of the country into three parts: one for religion; another for the support of the government; he distributes the third' portion among the citizens. Hence, no taxes. In the beginning there were patricians and plebeians in Rome; but this distinction of the patricians in the beginning, the word patrici, meant only, some authors say, those who could give the name of their fathers. How many bastards there must have been in the thirty-five tribes! The dignity of a prince of the Senate conferred only rank, without power. This post was, however, most honourable, ..

Agony and Eloquence

Agony and Eloquence

The drama of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson is the foundational story of America—courage, loyalty, hope, fanaticism, greatness, failure, forgiveness, love. Agony and Eloquence is the story of the greatest friendship in American history and the revolutionary times in which it was made, ruined, and finally renewed. In the wake of Washington’s retirement, longtime friends Thomas Jefferson and John Adams came to represent the opposing political forces struggling to shape America’s future. Adams’s victory in the presidential election of 1796 brought Jefferson into his administration—but as an unlikely and deeply conflicted vice president. The bloody Republican revolution in France finally brought their political differences to a bitter pitch. In Mallock’s take on this fascinating period, French foreign policy and revolutionary developments—from the fall of the Bastille to the fall of the Jacobins and the rise of Napoleon—form a disturbing and illuminating counterpoint to events, controversies, individuals, and relationships in Philadelphia and Washington. Many important and fascinating people appear in the book, including Thomas Paine, Camille Desmoulins, Dr. Benjamin Rush, Tobias Lear, Talleyrand, Robespierre, Danton, Saint-Just, Abigail Adams, Lafayette, James Madison, John Quincy Adams, Dr. Joseph Priestley, Samuel Adams, Philip Mazzei, John Marshall, Alexander Hamilton, and Edward Coles. They are brought to life by Mallock’s insightful analysis and clear and lively writing. Agony and Eloquence is a thoroughly researched and tautly written modern history. When the most important thing is at stake, almost anything can be justified.
