Excerpt from The Cambrian Quarterly Magazine and Celtic Repertory, 1829, Vol. 1 Efforts have, from time to time. Been made to preserve and bring into notice the valuable relics of Welsh genius, which, admired and prized as they are by the studious pf our countrymen, are still, for tho'cmost part, as utterly unknown to English readers as if they had no existence; and, though these efforts have been at tended with small success, as far as publicity is concerned, yet the zealous individuals, who, with little support from their own nation, and no encouragement from the literati of England, devoted their time and fortunes to the patriotic object, have at least been the meanspf preserving, for a more auspicious opportunity, treasures that must otherwise have been irretrievably lost. Excerpt from The Cambrian Quarterly Magazine and Celtic Repertory, 1830, Vol. 2 We are arrived at a milestone, three and a half miles from Barmouth, and, looking eastward to the hills, I observe a structure of other times, on the farther side of the field. Our direct way from hence to one of the principal objects of our excursion, situated upon a mountain plain, not seen from hence, just beyond that first high ground, would be to pass the old mansion, the name of which is Egryn; but our plan will be better executed, if we proceed a mile and a half farther along the Harlech road, and return by the ancient works now alluded to. But that old house, which attracted your attention, is one among several others of a similar character in this vale. It was originally the residence of a cymmro of some rank; and, in the fifteenth century, it was tenanted by friars. The inside is curious: the roof is supported by pointed arches, of fine Irish oak, springing from the basement, and dividing the building into three compartments. Over half of the middle one, which is the largest, there was till lately a gallery of communication between the apartments in each end, and pro tected by a balustrade, as if intended for an audience to hear and see what occurs on the earth below. How should you be so well acquainted with what you now describe Since I acquired this knowledge, a whole generation has passed away from hence to another world: in that house lived my parents, who have departed my brothers and sisters too, most of whom are gone. Let us proceed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Cambrian Quarterly Magazine and Celtic Repertory, 1831, Vol. 3 We will now make a few observations on sentiments of a different character, though they also are sometimes entertained by men who wish well to their countr It is by them ob'ected, why do you not publish your pamphlets in English? E peasantry are, in many instances, taught English in the schools, and they can read works in the latter tongue with equal profit and pleasure? Our only reply to this is in the simple fact, that the peasantry, as might naturally have been expected, read with more fondness works written in their mother tongue, as a proof of which we need only mention the well-known circumstance, that no less than fourteen periodicals in the Welsh language issue monthly from the press. We feel thoroughly convinced that this system of forcing the English language upon the people on all occasions, in season and out of season, in the service of the church and in the schools, is attended with every possible evil effect, and with no good one: it heightens their foolish prejudices against Englishmen: it makes them hate the English language itself, for the same reason that a schoolboy is taught to detest Latin it stupifies them, and disgusts them with learning, generally, because it is presented to them, in the first instance, in a most ungracious manner, and encumbered with a wanton superfluity of difficulties.
