The Nobles lose their home at 31 High Street to mortgage foreclosure in 1939, and widow Minnie Emerson Noble has to "win the bread" until June 1942 when her son Jerry finishes high school. During those three years, animated movies, art, bicycles, blueberries, church, dancing school, friends (one with ESP), music, even murder, impact the lives of mother and son until they board a train bound for Fresno, California on the day after 16-year-old Jerry's graduation. Staying a few months with Minnie's sister and her capable, one-armed Welsh husband until Jerry can become breadwinner, the Nobles embark on a new world of adventure in a strange city. They live independently in rented cottages and explore wartime California by bicycle and friends' automobiles, seeing the sights from Fresno to Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Yosemite National Park. As clerk, doorman, draftsman, and student, Jerry encounters optometrists, preachers, projectionists, sailors, singers, soldiers, usherettes. People from all backgrounds and all walks of life help him and his mother depend upon and build their faith in uncertain times.

California, here I am is a funny and shrewd Hollywood novel that takes us into the movie making scene: its hype, its glamour and its ruthlessness. At the same time, it chronicles a son's relationship with his father, as they wreak their own route through Beverley Hills, Santa Barbara, Sun Valley and eventually end up at a strange Caribbean island. It is a humorous but also moving story. The author, himself a Hollywood insider, gives some powerful insights into the ways and wiles of the industry and its protagonists.

In 1908, Congress authorized the town site of Parker to be reserved and set apart. The boundaries of the surveyed and platted town site are located within the interior of the Colorado River Indian Reservation, which was established in 1865. The federal government initially intended the town site as the location to create housing for employees of the Arizona and California Railroad Company, which had already begun using the location as a division point. By 1918, funds arising from the sale of town lots were needed for the continued construction of a pumping plant and irrigation project on the reservation. News outlets emphasized the business potential from both mining interests in the area and agricultural development once the reservation lands were open. However, as the test of time has proven, it is the enjoyment of activities on the Colorado River that keep bringing people back to this small desert town.

This musical captures on stage the story of America's greatest entertainer during his years as a star in the 1920s and his comeback in the 1940s. While Al Jolson recalls colorful moments from his life during an interview, two actors play all of the other characters, including some show business luminaries and his wives, Ruby Keeler among them. The vivid memories his mother, vaudeville, Broadway, feature films and five marriages together with unforgettable renditions of "Swanee," "You Made Me Love You," "Sonny Boy," "California Here I Come," "April Showers," "Mammy" and other Jolson standards made this sparkling bio musical a hit Off-Broadway and in London.
