The first series is one of many collections preserved in the State Paper Office which refer to those foreign countries with which England has at any time held diplomatic relations; consisting of the correspondence between the Sovereigns and rulers of the respective countries; the treaties which were made between them; the communi cations which emanated from the ministers on either side; the letters of ambassadors, special commissioners, leaders of armies, spies, and other agents, who corresponded with the officers of state on the public affairs of the countries in which they resided or to which they were accredited.
