Excerpt from Business Organization and Administration This book is written in the belief that there exists a need for a text which may form the basis Of a short course in the fundamentals of business administration and management and which will bring before the student. Those bigger business problems upon the proper solution Of which success in business largely depends. In some schools such a course may supplement the work in book-keeping and Office practice, while in others it may form an introduction to the more specialized and advanced courses in the field. Even a bare statement Of the most essential facts Of business practice is an ambitious under taking. Much had to be omitted which might have been included. In fact, the most difficult task in the preparation Of this volume was the elimination Of material. It is hoped that in this process Of trimming, nothing has been pruned away which is absolutely necessary to give the student a picture Of the most common business situations. Notwithstanding such may be discovered, the aim has been to place within easy access of others that degree of assistance which the author would have welcomed had some one else extended it to him in years gone by. Excerpt from Business Administration Collegiate training for business administration is now so widely attempted that the time has arrived when experiments should be conducted looking toward the organization of the business curriculum into a coherent whole. Training in scattered business subjects was defensible enough in the earlier days of collegiate business training, but such a method cannot be permanent. It must yield to a more comprehensive organization. There can be no doubt that many experiments will be conducted looking toward this goal; they are, indeed, already under way. This series, Materials for the Study of Business, marks one stage in such an experiment in the School of Commerce and Administration of the University of Chicago. Excerpt from The American Office: Its Organization, Management Ment and Records Eliminating waste effort is the aim of the age. There is no gainsaying the fact that this world of ours is wasting millions of dollars doing useless things with brains and body. The efficiency movement and the scientific management movement are the natural results of an almost universal desire to avoid the useless. The factory has had the lion's share of attention during all this attempt to reduce motions and increase output - that is, reduce costs. The office is only now coming into its own. Lack of literature and the feeling that the office is "different" have been somewhat responsible for the delay in applying to the office the principles that have been found sound in the factory. Yet, taking the country as a whole, we find certain principles applied here and others there. Unconsciously, business concerns have, each contributing a part, built up what might almost be termed a "science of office organization and management." There is no need therefore, to expound new theories. The author has found it unnecessary to go beyond the experiences of the better managed offices. The book is divided into three parts. Part I deals with the organization of an office. The elements of organization are treated at some length, since there does not seem to be any other standard description of them in book form. The reader is also told how to combine these elements into an efficient whole. Part II deals with the intensely interesting subject of management. The author found it difficult to confine himself to the illustrations quoted; it was thought best, however, to quote only such instances as would give the reader a conception of the lengths to which he may go. Excerpt from Lectures on Organization: Delivered in the Course on Industrial Organization in the Graduate School of Business Administration of Harvard University As an industry or business begins to involve large size, great numbers, and complexity, organization becomes necessary simply for the direction, control, and handling of affairs, quite aside from any question of direct economy. It becomes necessary to set off groups of workers, to divide responsibilities, duties, and processes, so that affairs may be kept within the scope and ability of those who are directing the undertaking. A virtue has, however, been made of this necessity for division, because it becomes possible, by dividing duties and functions, to conserve special skill, ability, and use, and to direct all effort into definite paths, to which it becomes accustomed and thus gains in efficiency. It is of little importance how the great growth in industries has come, - whether a realization of the benefits that arise with division of labor and conserving of skill induced us to gain size so that these advantages might be brought into play, or whether size came first and the advantages were a fortuitous accompaniment. Excerpt from The Organization of a Small Business During the last few years numerous books dealing with Office Organization have appeared, but there seems to be a paucity of instructive literature relative to the administration of a small business. This little work is intended to set forth the principles of Office Organization in such a manner that the small trader can apply them to his business.
