Excerpt from The Wind Dissemination of the Spores of Bunt or Stinking Smut of Wheat The wide-spread occurrence of a fungous disease points to an effective dissemination, either natural or artificial. Fun gous troubles may be seed-home, or they may be disseminated by wind, water, insects, birds or other animals or by the com mercial or agricultural practices of man. Since early times the stinking smut of wheat has been recognized as one of the most important seed-borne diseases, and seed treatment with fungicides has generally been effective in its control. The fail ure to secure the desired relief by seed treatment naturally sug gests some other general method of dissemination aside from the use of infected seed. Work was begun on this phase of the smut problem in the summer of 1915 and has been continued up to the present time. Before presenting this work, a brief state ment will be made concerning the general methods of dis semination of the smut fungi of. Cereals and the time when infection takes place. Disease resistance is one of the major factors that can be improved to sustain yield potential in cultivated crops. This book looks at disease resistance in wheat, concentrating on all the economically important diseases -- their economic impact and geographical spread, breeding for resistance, pathogen variability, resistance mechanisms and recent advances made on resistance genes. Newer strategies for identifying resistance genes and identify resistance mechanisms are discussed, including cloning, gene transfer and the use of genetically modified plants.
