Excerpt from The Bulletin of the Western Theological Seminary, Vol. 1 of 3: October, 1910 t he generous provision which nature has made for these people Of tropical Africa accounts for many of their habits Of life. Are they indolent? Nature has made indo lence possible and even convenient for them. Are they improvident? Why should they lay by for the morrow Which has always so generously taken care of itself! His word for clothing means adornment, and only with the coming Of the White man has it taken on our idea Of cloth ing. Excerpt from The Bulletin of the Western Theological Seminary: A Review Devoted to the Interests of Theological Education; Published Five Times During the Year: In January, February, April, July and October, by the Trustees of the Western Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America Some time ago I listened to an encyclopedic and able paper on the subject of "The Material and Method of Theology." This article is a contribution to the second division of that subject - viz., the Method of Theology. It might be thought in advance that the material is more important than the method. But a knowledge of the history of discussion contradicts that view. It will be found that method has been more potent than material. The reason is plain. Method has determined the point of view. The point of view has been the organizing principle in the use of material, so that the worth of material has been made relative. Its bearing upon and value to a system of thought has been influenced by classification, the place assigned it in the construction of the system. Ministers are familiar with this thought. When they have gathered the material for a sermon they do not have the sermon by any means. The use made of the material is relatively the important thing. Excerpt from The Bulletin of the Western Theological Seminary: A Review Devoted to the Interests of Theological Education My father and mother were accomplished vocalists and sang together, years ago, in the. Choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh. Indeed, it is a mat ter of quite tender sentiment with me, in connection with my pastorate of this church, that this may have had much to do with their sub-sequent marriage and so, naturally, with my own appearance upon this 'terrestrial ball.
