Rural America is on the frontier of a new economy. Entrepreneurs are crucial to claiming that frontier, as enormous changes sweep through other traditional rural industries like agriculture and manufacturing. While rural America has a long and proud heritage of entrepreneurship, its future is not guaranteed. Economic development in rural places often has depended on a host of subsidies. The huge sums that are spent on industrial recruitment are but one example of how current policies overlook entrepreneurs. How can public policy help make rural America a more entrepreneurial place? What steps are needed to spur new businesses and then nurture them into strong, growing companies? Main Streets of Tomorrow: Growing and Financing Rural Entrepreneurs brought together rural leaders and experts from throughout the nation to answer these questions. The conference was hosted by the Bank's Center for the Study of Rural America in Kansas City on April 28-29, 2003. Conference participants agreed that entrepreneurship is the new focal point for rural development. While programs aimed at business innovation are neither easy nor a quick fix, they do hold great promise in helping rural regions unlock new economic potential. We trust that these proceedings will help to inform the unfolding dialogue on growing more businesses on Main Street. Thomas M. Rural communities in Canada are facing a new reality where traditional economic bases such as agriculture, forestry, and manufacturing have eroded. The digital divide, whereby rural Canada lags in access to broadband, has created further barriers to participating in the emerging knowledge economy. Revitalizing Rural Economies offers practical tools for developers, business people, and community leaders. The result of a partnership between the Monieson Centre at Queen's School of Business and entrepreneurs, policy makers, economic development officials, and elected representatives from rural communities across southern Ontario, Revitalizing Rural Economies draws on four years of community-based research to provide strategies for economic revitalization. Integrating case studies and community development guidelines, the authors explore themes such as the building blocks for community economic development (CED), innovation, community assets, vibrant downtowns, social capital accumulation through collaboration and inclusion, and new opportunities for rural economies through creative and value-added businesses. Designed as a practical guide, this book serves as a primer to CED, while also allowing those familiar with the field to delve deeper. Case studies ground the discussion in the challenges and opportunities facing communities. The book provides ideas and resources to foster the long-term resilience of rural regions.

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Thema: Entwicklungspolitik, Hawassa University, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Currently, there has been a growing interest in small rural business development and entrepreneurship as conduits for accelerating job opportunities – for the youth and for poverty reduction. Despite the policy recognition, the economic performance of the rural entrepreneurs or enterprises is not ground-breaking. This might not be without any factors that daunting the development of the rural entrepreneurs to make their due contribution to the development of their community. Hence, this study was undertaken in order to assess common militating challenges of the development pace and fate of rural entrepreneurship, to trace out the opportunities open to start new businesses and expand the existing ones and to examine the prospects of rural entrepreneurship. In order to achieve the desired objectives the study both qualitative as well as quantitative methods were employed. From the total of 503 entrepreneurs in the study area 125 samples were selected using multistage sampling technique. In line with this, structured questionnaire and unstructured interview were employed as instruments of data collection. The data collected through questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively and to analyze the interview data qualitative approach was applied. After the data analyzed carefully, it was found that, the rural entrepreneurship in the study area conditioned by different business environment factors which are either internal or external to the businesses. Personal traits of business owners and managerial competences and skill related deficiencies are among internal factors affecting their success. Whereas market factors, economic factors, political factors and social factors were among the challenges external to the business setting. It was also found that rural areas are not unfortunate areas to do business even though there were militating challenges. In order to make them a true catalysts of rural development, rural entrepreneurs themselves should be vigilant of the existing opportunities and make attempt to change opportunities into business, government should also play a primary role in solving its internal limitations that hinder the possibility of rural transformation through rural entrepreneurship and different bodies i.e. media, NGOs should take part in promoting rural entrepreneurship.

In recent years, rural entrepreneurship has emerged as a potent catalyst for social transformation, reshaping the landscape of traditional rural economies and empowering local communities. Gone are the days when rural areas were perceived as stagnant and deprived. Today, they serve as hubs of innovation, creativity, and growth, thanks to the vision and determination of rural entrepreneurs. Through their ventures, rural entrepreneurs not only create employment opportunities but also revitalize the local economy by tapping into unique resources and cultural heritage. By fostering a culture of self-reliance and resilience, they instill confidence in the local populace and inspire the youth to stay rooted in their communities, halting the migration to urban centers. Furthermore, rural entrepreneurship fosters skill development, knowledge transfer, and technological adoption, bridging the urban-rural divide. As these businesses flourish, they prioritize sustainability and environmental stewardship, promoting eco-friendly practices and green technologies. Moreover, rural entrepreneurship plays a pivotal role in addressing social issues such as gender inequality and poverty. It empowers women by offering them equal participation and leadership opportunities while also uplifting marginalized sections through inclusive growth strategies. In conclusion, the role of rural entrepreneurship in driving social transformation cannot be overstated. As more individuals like Kiran Kannan embrace the challenge of creating meaningful change, rural communities will continue to thrive, leading to a brighter and more equitable future for all.

Natural disasters-including hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods-caused more than 220,000 deaths worldwide in the first half of 2010 and wreaked havoc on homes, buildings, and the environment. To withstand and recover from natural and human-caused disasters, it is essential that citizens and communities work together to anticipate threats, limit their effects, and rapidly restore functionality after a crisis. Increasing evidence indicates that collaboration between the private and public sectors could improve the ability of a community to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Several previous National Research Council reports have identified specific examples of the private and public sectors working cooperatively to reduce the effects of a disaster by implementing building codes, retrofitting buildings, improving community education, or issuing extreme-weather warnings. State and federal governments have acknowledged the importance of collaboration between private and public organizations to develop planning for disaster preparedness and response. Despite growing ad hoc experience across the country, there is currently no comprehensive framework to guide private-public collaboration focused on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Building Community Disaster Resilience through Private-Public Collaboration assesses the current state of private-public sector collaboration dedicated to strengthening community resilience, identifies gaps in knowledge and practice, and recommends research that could be targeted for investment. Specifically, the book finds that local-level private-public collaboration is essential to the development of community resilience. Sustainable and effective resilience-focused private-public collaboration is dependent on several basic principles that increase communication among all sectors of the community, incorporate flexibility into collaborative networks, and encourage regular reassessment of collaborative missions, goals, and practices.
