Excerpt from British Galleries of Painting and Sculpture: Comprising a General Historical and Critical Catalogue, With Separate Notices of Every Work of Fine Art in the Principal Collections The establishment of the Royal Academy, nu der the parental care of our late illustrious and revered Monarch, first broke the trammels of pre judice; and from that time to the present period, under the auspices of our munificent reigning King, whose fine taste and liberal encourage ment of the arts must ever shed a lustre round his name brighter far than the most costly jewel in his diadem, have we continued to increase in dignity and importance until the mighty efforts of succeeding genius have not only equalled the Artists Of the Flemish, Italian, and French schools, but in originality, truth Of drawing, natural colour ing, and felicity of composition, have eclipsed them all; nor have the efforts of the Sculptor been less successful: the application of his art naturally confines it within a narrower space, but it islthe boast of Genius to rise superior to local difli culties, and we may now' proudly point to the works of British Sculptors which adorn our pub lic places and cathedrals, and challenge competi tion with the world. Excerpt from The Art of the National Gallery: A Critical Survey of the Schools and Painters as Represented in the British Collection The pictures in the National Gallery are ar ranged according to the schools of painting in their historic order, thus enabling one to treat of its treasures in a very satisfactory way, by natural progression. The comparative value of the schools may come within the scope of this book, although, since the chain is not absolutely complete, and some examples are necessarily missing, it is not the author's intention to claim that she offers a history of the various schools of art. Only so far as it is possible to illustrate by examples, will the historic continuity be emphasized. In tracing the early history of the art of paint ing, it has been thought more interesting to consult the original authorities and the contemporary trea tises, rather than later commentators, when dealing with technical processes, such as tempera, fresco, encaustic, and oil-painting. Excerpt from The British Museum, the Townley Gallery, Vol. 1 The following anecdote is related in Nichole's Illustra tions of Literature, upon the authority of 11 r. Dallaway, vol. Iii. P. 727. Upon the receipt of a letter from Jenkins, at Townley, promising him the first choice of some discovered stables, Mr. Townley instanti set off for Italy, without companion or bagga and, taking the common post conveyance, arrived incognito at Rome, on the precise day when a very rich cava was to be explored. He stood near, as an uninterested spec tator, till be perceived the discovery of an exquisite statue, little injured, and which decided his choice. Observing that his agent was urgent in concealing it, he withdrew to wait the event. Upon his calling at Mr. J enkins's house in the Com, who was not a little surprised by his sudden appearance, the statue in question was studiously concealed, while the other pieces were shared between them with apparent liberality. Excerpt from A Catalogue of Books Placed in the Galleries in the Reading Room of the British Museum The present collection is not to be regarded as a Library of Reference. The chief object in forming it has been to bring together in a convenient position the books in general demand, and thus to save time in supplying books to the readers. Many books therefore which would not otherwise have found a place in it have been included, because they were found to be often asked for, and others because they form parts of collections, desirable as a whole, from which it was impossible to separate them. As far as possible, the new works and new editions have been included up to the time of going to press. It is proposed for the future that new books of importance should be incorporated into this collection as they appear, and that those which may have become obsolete, should, from time to time, be removed. It is hoped that when the plan is in full operation, there may be, within the walls of the Reading Room, a Library of some sixty thousand volumes, comprising the most useful books upon all subjects, kept up to date by the constant addition of new publications, and freely and quickly available at all hours at which the Reading Room is open to the public.
