The countryside of Norfolk has for centuries challenged artists to paint its wide landscapes, seascapes and incomparable skies. And while many have tried, few have wholly succeeded. Brian Ryder is among the fortunate handful of contemporary painters who the public recognise as successfully capturing both the physical quality and the essential atmosphere of the places he paints. His bold approach to making his work, his uncompromising self criticism allied to years honing his painterly skills, give his paintings an exciting and fresh appeal - combining the best of painting tradition with a unique contemporary flair. In this book we are given an insight into the background of the artist, his early life and his development as a painter. Despite a number of setbacks his determination to succeed brought early recognition in the form of an exhibition and a gold medal at La Biennale deVenezia. His love ofVenice is portrayed through the paintings of that wonderful city that are included here. But it is the artist¿s Norfolk paintings that form the bulk of this book, appropriately so, as the county is now very much Brian¿s adopted home. Anyone with a love of Norfolk and its spectacular landscape will find much to delight them among the superb paintings included here. Brian Ryder lives and paints in North Norfolk. He paints in oils, watercolour and mixed media. His work is held in many collections internationally both private and public. Brian is a provisional member ofThe Royal Institute of Oil Painters and chairman of theWells Art Group. As well as Brian's successful books and DVDs, Brian teaches his painting techniques around the world and contributes regularly to Leisure Painter magazine.

Lesser Feasts and Fasts had not been updated since 2006. This updated edition, adopted at the 79th General Convention (resolution A065), fills that need. Biographies and collects associated with those included within the volume have been updated; a deliberate effort has been made to more closely balance the men and women represented within its pages.

The function of the painted wooden object ranges from the practical to the profound. These objects may perform utilitarian tasks, convey artistic whimsy, connote noble aspirations, and embody the highest spiritual expressions. This volume, illustrated in color throughout, presents the proceedings of a conference organized by the Wooden Artifacts Group of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and held in November 1994 at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, Virginia. The book includes 40 articles that explore the history and conservation of a wide range of painted wooden objects, from polychrome sculpture and altarpieces to carousel horses, tobacconist figures, Native American totems, Victorian garden furniture, French cabinets, architectural elements, and horse-drawn carriages. Contributors include Ian C. Bristow, an architect and historic-building consultant in London; Myriam Serck-Dewaide, head of the Sculpture Workshop, Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique, Brussels; and Frances Gruber Safford, associate curator of American decorative arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A broad range of professionals—including art historians, curators, scientists, and conservators—will be interested in this volume and in the multidisciplinary nature of its articles.

Late in his career, Claude Monet returned to London to paint the fog that had entranced him years before. The resulting sequence of pictures represents some of the fascination that French painters felt for Britain. Similarly, many British collectors and young painters embraced and were influenced by the work of the French Impressionists. This book describes the activities of the French Impressionist painters on their visits to Britain, considers the dissemination of Impressionist painting through British dealers and collectors, explores the response of artists from Britain and Ireland to the Impressionist movement, and sets all of these against the backdrop of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain. McConkey and Robins describe the work of Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, and other Impressionists working in London, showing how this art influenced the community of young British painters disenchanted with British art schools and art exhibiting standards. The authors investigate the role played by two innovative painters who were American expatriates, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. And they explain how such artists as William Orpen, George Clausen, Stanhope Forbes, Henry La Thangue, Walter Sickert, and Philip Wilson Steer sought out new and radical approaches to picture making, formed new secessionist art societies, and articulated new concepts of the role of art, rejecting historical pageants and fashionable aestheticism and focusing on modern rural and urban conditions. The book is the catalogue of an exhibition that will be at the Barbican Art Gallery in London from January to March 1995, and then move to Dublin.
