John R. Botts was born and grew up at Ludden, N.D. He attended the North Dakota Agricultural College in 1939, and in 1940 worked for Lockheed Aircraft in California. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and saw duty in New Guinea, Cebu Island, Luzon, and Kyoto, Japan. He returned to the NDAC and graduated in 1948. His career included working for General Electric, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Montana-Dakota Utilities, Line Materials Co., Resco, and Fluor Daniel.
