This book looks at the traditional answer to the question of man’s freedom on earth - the answer that holds that for man to be free he needs to be made to become a perpetual subject. And dismisses it. This work submits that man is not born to be a subject but a free man. Because it contends that, contrary to Rousseau’s thoughts, man is born in chains and that it is these chains that he must learn to break to be free. It subsequently submits that for man to be able to break his chains he needs to be made to become his true self and shows how to make man become his true self.

Fifty Years in Chains: Or, the Life of an American Slave (1859) was an abridged and unauthorized reprint of the earlier Slavery in the United States (1836). In the narratives, Ball describes his experiences as a slave, including the uncertainty of slave life and the ways in which the slaves are forced to suffer inhumane conditions. He recounts the qualities of his various masters and the ways in which his fortune depended on their temperament. As slave narrative scholar William L. Andrews has noted, Ball's oft-repeated narrative directly influenced the manner and matter of later fugitive slave.

If an entire nation could seek its freedom, why not a girl? As the Revolutionary War begins, thirteen-year-old Isabel wages her own fight...for freedom. Promised freedom upon the death of their owner, she and her sister, Ruth, in a cruel twist of fate become the property of a malicious New York City couple, the Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Ruth and Isabel. When Isabel meets Curzon, a slave with ties to the Patriots, he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of British plans for invasion. She is reluctant at first, but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realizes her loyalty is available to the bidder who can provide her with freedom. From acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson comes this compelling, impeccably researched novel that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual.

This is my fourth and final book on poetry. I was born and raised in Vancouver, B.C, Canada. I am retired and now have the "time" to really relax and grasp the meaning of "living in the moment" and cherish each and every day given. Any spare time I do have is spent reading books, going for my walks, enjoying nature and music. I had not counted on publishing another book, but sometimes ‘life’ has other ideas. This book you now hold was written during a very difficult period in my life. I was struggling with recovering both emotionally and physically. From these struggles this book was born. You will see many of my poems reflect the challenges I faced and my feelings that ensued. It is my hope that if any of you are facing difficult times...then my poems may help you relate. For those of you that are not faced with life’s challenges, then by reading this book, you may be more prepared. Truly my poems were 'inspired' and I hope the poems will leave "footprints" in your heart.

"Broadcasters are bound to ratings with chains of gold which they are reluctant to break..." --Oren Harris, House of Representatives This comprehensive exploration of the evolution of broadcast ratings documents the experiences of ratings pioneers from past to present as they have developed a standardized network and local market ratings vocabulary. Buzzard traces the rise of Nielsen and Arbitron to their present position of dominance in the ratings business and also ties conceptual changes in the methods and terminology used to measure audiences to advertising and marketing and the competitive factors that shaped them.

A doomed king and his wife-to-be attempt to flee their fate in this novel by “the finest fantasy writer of this or any decade” (Marion Zimmer Bradley). Cerilla, the sheltered, castle-bound protagonist of this inventive and moving fantasy novel, is determined to escape her bloody fate: marriage to a king who is to be sacrificed after she bears his child. But Cerilla makes the monumental mistake of falling in love with her god-like husband to be—Arlen of the Sacred Isle—and he with her. Arlen’s devoted comrade Lonn takes Arlen’s place so the lovers can flee. But their escape is just the beginning of an odyssey marked by struggle and hardship as they cope with hyperboreal storms, near starvation, and attack by a band of armed horsemen. As they journey across harsh and fantastic lands, finally making a home beyond the Mountains of the Mysteries, Cerilla discovers how much she is willing to give up in the name of love. Featuring a mythical world where horses gallop across water and serpents live beneath the earth, Chains of Gold is about finding your path in life, staying true to who you are, and the ultimate meaning of sacrifice. From a winner of the Tiptree Award and other honors, an author who “writes like a dream,” it’s an unforgettable reading experience (St. Louis Post-Dispatch).

This is the story of a handful of men, led by Thomas Clarkson, who defied the slave trade and ignited the first great human rights movement. Beginning in 1788, a group of Abolitionists moved the cause of anti-slavery from the floor of Parliament to the homes of 300,000 people boycotting Caribbean sugar, and gave a platform to freed slaves.
