Maybe your grandchildren are living with you. Maybe they're thousands of miles away. Their parents may be spiritually rebellious or simply neglectful of the family's spiritual life, failing to make prayer and church attendance a regular part of their routine. But even if your grandchildren's parents have established a strong Christian home, busy schedules, jobs, parenting, and all the distractions of today's world conspire to distract or even destroy the family. How can you, as a grandparent, help? God gives grandparents a sacred trust an opportunity to imprint another generation with the message of his faithfulness. You can stand in the gap by being a godly example for your grandchildren and by praying for them. Even grandparents who already pray regularly for their grandchildren will discover creative suggestions for making the practice even more meaningful. From cell phones to photo prayer journals, you'll find tools that work for you and for your grandchildren. Author Lillian Ann Penner provides specific examples of prayers to help you get started, such as alphabet prayers, prayers based on special scriptures, and prayers for certain holidays. You may even widen the circle, praying for other children in your life, for children who have parents in the military, and for the adults who influence your grandchildren. Regardless of how far away your grandchildren are, praying for them can bridge the distance between you and leave them with an inheritance more precious than gold.

In December of 2000, the authors husband, Randall, fell from a deer stand while hunting and broke both legs in several places. Randall had always been a strong, healthy, hardworking man with a wonderful job, but this took him and his family to a very low place in their lives. He spent three months in the hospital and had five surgeries to repair his legs. The doctors said he would never walk again! Shirley carried many burdens during that time including tending to a crippled and broken man and handling crashing finances because he was unable to work. Feeling really hopeless and alone, she shed many tears and prayed very hard. One night (actually about 2:00 a.m. in February of 2001), she sat up on the edge of her cot in her husbands hospital room and begin to write in a journal she was keeping. When she finished writing her prayer to God, she read it and realized that it was in the form of a poem (Why Are You So Afraid, My Child)! Since that time the poetry has flowed from her heart in a miraculous way. And she has written a huge collection of poetry! She believes the poetry is a gift from God to help her express what she is feeling deep inside. It flows from her heart in a matter of minutes and falls onto the page in poetry form! She praises God for this gift!

Whether your grandchildren live with you, just around the corner, or a thousand miles away, praying for them every day is one of the most important ways you can show your love and concern. And when you are searching for the right words, Bless My Grandchild is the prayer book you need. This follow-up to Julie Cragon’s bestseller, Bless My Child, combines original and traditional prayers and devotions that will help you place the joys and worries you experience as a grandparent in the hands of God. “Grandparents are the living memory of the family,” Pope Francis noted. “They pass on the faith; they transmitted the faith to us.” In Bless My Grandchild, bestselling Catholic author Julie Cragon combines thoughtful scripture quotes and wisdom from saints along with prayers appropriate for every milestone and circumstance of a grandchild’s life, from conception through adulthood, including special circumstances and contemporary needs. There are prayers for: the first day of school, adoption, learning to read, courage, sacramental milestones, and illness or death of a friend, family member, or pet. The book concludes with traditional prayers and novenas that you can teach a grandchild or offer on their family’s behalf, including the novena to St. Jude, “Stations of the Cross for My Grandchild,” the Angelus, and “Consecration of the Family.”

Sometimes, women are faced with an extremely difficult decision. An unplanned or unwanted pregnancy can seem overwhelming for some. Sharing the message of a loving life option and letting women know that we care about them too is so important. My hopes and prayers are that more women will make the loving and beautiful choice-adoption. I was blessed to have been adopted at birth, and I wanted to share my stories in the hope that they will touch people's hearts. The main reason I began writing was to promote adoption and let people know about the help that is available. Each story is unique and special in its own way and reflects my pro-life mission. If you are looking for something heartwarming, funny, or just true to life, you will find it in this book. If you are looking for some type of guidance or help, that is here too. My faith in God, my family, and my pro-life work are the main topics in these stories. The words come from my heart with a sincere desire to help others. Whether the stories are fun and upbeat or of a more serious nature, I always pray that God will guide my hands and give me the right words. Included in this book is a sweet story about my adoption as well as stories about my boisterous family life as a wife, mother, and grandmother of ten. There are some really touching stories about the people I have met while helping at the Sack Lunch Ministry at my parish as well as from the past four 40 Days for Life campaigns that have been held in our parish courtyard. Blessings to you and yours! Bye for now. Sharla.

These memoirs are a history of pioneering siblings orphaned by a murder/suicide who settled virgin prairie to build an international cattle empire only to lose it in the Great Depression. It is also a story of courage, faith, determination and family values as one family struggles to keep their home and the land they tamed. It is not heroic, it is every day life. It is about a family struggling with the realities of life while dreaming of a better future. Rich only in the blessings of life in America, solid values and devoted family they had all the things that money couldn't buy and through it all, one man who was "so damn grateful". Written from the perspective of an Iowa farmer who was born and lived on the same land for 92 years, this is a history tempered by 368 change of seasons, World Wars, a Great Depression and technology advances that have rocked the very foundations of our world. But most of all, 92 years of working with and sometimes battling Mother Nature tempered by family, friends and God. That makes this not so much a history of a family as a way of life.
