Excerpt from Bismarck, Vol. 2 of 3: Some Secret Pages of His History, Being a Diary Kept by Dr. Moritz Busch During Twenty-Five Years' Official and Private Intercourse With the Great Chancellor Before resuming the extracts from my diary I beg to be allowed to present the reader with a picture of the house in which the Chancellor resided during his stay in Berlin at the time when I had the honour of working under his instructions, and to add a few words upon the life of which that house was the centre. I purpose to do this in some detail, not omitting even matters of secondary interest, and regardless of the question whether it may be to the taste of certain critics, as I hope the public will come to a very different conclusion, and will welcome my description. Excerpt from Bismarck, the Man and the Statesman, Vol. 2 of 3: Being the Reflections and Reminiscences of Otto Prince Von Bismarck, Written and Dictated by Himself After His Retirement From Office After I had developed my views, Schleinitz was called upon to bring his forward. He did this by a reference to the will of Frederick William III. Thus skilfully touch ing a Chord which never failed to find a response in the mind of the Regent. He described the anxieties and dangers which threatened us from the West, from Paris, and at home, if our relations with Austria, in spite of all justifiable grounds for sensitiveness, failed to be maintained. The dangers of a combination between Russia and France, which even at that time was Openly discussed, were set forth, and the possibility of an alliance between Prussia and Russia was said to be condemned by public Opinion. It was characteristic of the Regent that, as soon as Schleinitz had spoken the last word of a fluent and evi dently carefully-prepared speech, he at once declared in a lucid statement that in accordance with the traditions of his ancestors he decided in favour of the minister von Schleinitz. This brought the discussion to a speedy conclusion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Period of Fortification, 1880-1898The burst of capitalistic expansion that accompanied German unification came to an abrupt end with the crash of 1873, which opened a period of economic depression. Volume III describes the continuation of Bismarck's efforts to cope with the resulting economic and social problems that hindered his quest for a new national consensus in support of the Prussian-German establishment." It also brings to a climax theauthor's account of Bismarck's mounting political frustrations, their psychopathological consequences, and the struggle of his doctors to convert him to a healthier life-style. The final chapters deal with the fascinating story of Bismarck's conflict with Wilhelm II. The work ends with an account of the Bismarck legend that endures to this day and may yet influence Germany's current quest for reunification. Originally published in 1990.
