Excerpt from Biographical Memoirs of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 From fuch publications real information can rarely be derived; if the narrators have afforded means of tracing the progrefs of their own conduct from year to year, they have feldom prefented true motives of aftion, or faithfully difplayed their ultimate views. The biographical works which have appeared in the courfe of the French Revolution are, therefore, not to be implicitly depended on, but can only obtain a partial credit, by a comparifon with cotemporary narratives and with the billory of the times. Excerpt from Memoirs and Correspondence of Mallet Du Pan, Illustrative of the History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 As far as possible, the purely conjectural discussions which naturally abound in many of these pages have been omitted; but Whatever partook of the nature of historic critique and philosophic judgment, whatever could serve to define the manner in which events were felt by con temporaries, has been, and deserved to be, retained: we hope that it will be so considered. In one word, we have desired to produce an useful work, and we have been on our guard against allowing it to be in any sense a work of vanity, confident of thus honouring, with a respect which he would have accepted, the least vain of men, and most practical of thinkers. Excerpt from The Year One: A Page of the French Revolution To do so I have gone entirely to French writ ers and, above all, to French writers of the period; While making use principally, and wher ever it has been possible, of the records left he hind by those Who had lain in deadly peril and who, after having escaped by the mercy of heaven, wrote careful memoirs and diaries of their trials and tribulations. Every private family of any note in France is full of such records as these, to say nothing of the vast stores of literature on the subject with which the State libraries and museums are filled; and to more than one French family I am indebted not only for a sight of some of these treasures but, also, for many extracts willingly made and forwarded to me. Excerpt from Ory of the Girondists, Vol. 1 of 3: Or Personal Memoirs of the Patriots of the French Revolution We have not thought it necessary to preface this recital by any introduction of the preceding epochs of the Revolution. We have not re-produced, with the minute elaboration of an annalist, the numerous parliamentary and military details of all the events of these forty months. Two or three times we have, in order to group men and circumstances in masses, made unimportant anachronisms. We have written after having scrupulously investigated facts and characters: we do not ask to be credited on our mere word only. Although we have not encumbered our work with notes, quotations, and documentary testimony, we. have not made one assertion unauthorised by authentic memoirs, by unpublished manuscripts, by autograph letters, which the families of the most conspicuous persons have confided to our care, or by oral and well confirmed statements gathered from the lips of the last survivors of this great epoch. If some errors in fact or judgment have, notwithstanding, escaped us, we shall be ready to acknowledge them and repair them in sequent editions, when the proofs have been transmitted to us. Excerpt from Madame De Stael, Vol. 1 of 2: A Study of Her Life and Times; The First Revolution and the First Empire I have not been able to find, in any language, anything like an adequate biography of Madame de Stael - a woman who, more than any other, (not excepting Madame Roland) represents her epoch, and that the epoch of the modern history of Europe. The best of French critics, Sainte Beuve, has accorded to her this pre - eminence. How incomplete, ' exclaims Gefl'roy (revue des Deux Mondes, tome vi. Are the biographies of Madame de Stael Her gifted cousin, Madame Necker de Saussure, prepared for the first edition of her collected works (ceuvres Completes de Madame de Stae'l, 17 vols. Paris, 1820 - 21) a Notice on her Character and Writings which is the best memoir of her yet given to the world nearly all the facts of her early life, recorded by other writers, are borrowed from it; yet, of its more than three hundred and seventy pages, seven eighths are devoted to general remarks on hercharacter and critical remarks on her works. She complains of the paucity of her data, the difficulty of constructing a connected history of her friend. The writings of Madame de Sta'el, particularly her Ten Years of Exile, ' her Considerations on the French Revolution, and her sketch of her father introductory to his Manuscripts (a sketch which Benjamin Constant pronounced her best self-reve lation), are replete with allusions to her own life; but these are mostly detached and vague. The superabundant 'memoirs' of her times, and the histories of the French Revolution, of the Litera ture, and of the Society of the epoch, abound in similar allusions, but they seem equally intractable to any attempt to reduce them to the correlation and consistence requisite for a biography of the usual form. Hence, probably, it is that, with almost innumerable biographical sketches, we have as yet no real biography of this greatest of literary women, greatest by the events of her life, if not by her literary productions. Excerpt from Private Trials and Public Calamities, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Early Life of Alexandrine Des cherolles, During the Troubles of the First French Revolution Tm: motives which have induced me to publish the following pages, can be of no interest to any one besides my own family. They were for the most part written many years ago; and although many details have been excised which appeared to me superfluous, and likely to prove tedious to those not personally concerned, the public may still think I have been too prolix, and I therefore wish to commend myself to their indulgence. These Memoirs were origi nally destined for the perusal of friendly eyes alone; and, although their destination has been altered, I cannot alter the whole 'tone of a narrative dictated by the feelings of my heart, and written in the familiar style of an address to a beloved niece.
