The purpose of the present text is to distil the experience of a number of workers active in the field of biochemical education, so providing readable accounts which, it is hoped, will be of significant benefit to those who are new to the teaching profession in addition to those who may be stimulated to experiment with alternative strategies in their own teaching situation. From the various contributions considered in this book, each topic, in its widest sense, would warrant at least a volume on its own and indeed such texts are currently available. However, it was felt more appropriate to restrict the coverage to those aspects which are of particular use to the subject of biochemistry and, for which, work in this area has already achieved some measure of success. In effect what each of us is doing is supplying findings from a body of knowledge collectively called educational technology. Without entering the debate on the semantics of what educational technology is or is not, it doesn't take long to realise that, like the vast majority of subject areas, it has its own unique terminologies and vocabulary. Whilst it is inevitable that such terms will appear throughout the text, hopefully all will be explained on first use and so it is not envisaged that this will be too distractive to the reader.

Showcasing exceptionally clear writing, innovative graphics, coverage of the latest research techniques and advances, and a signature emphasis on physiological and medical relevance. FOCUS OF THE NINTH EDITION In developing a ninth edition, the focused on three specific areas to help biochemistry students manage the complexity of the course, engage with the material, and become more proficient problem solvers. Integrated text and media to help student visualize Biochemistry is paired for the first time with SaplingPlus, the most innovative digital solution for Biochemistry students. Media-rich resources have been developed to support students’ ability to visualize and understand individual and complex biochemistry concepts. Built-in assessments help students keep on track with reading and become proficient problem solvers with the help and guidance of hints and targeted feedback—ensuring every problem counts as a true learning experience. Promote effective problem-solving Tools to help students think critically and approach problem solving. A diverse selection of problem types help students develop skills and strategies to approach both single concept problems and multi-concept problems. Higher order thinking is promoted with unique case studies, new Think/Pair/Share Problems and new specialized problems. Built-in assessments help students keep on track with reading and become proficient problem solvers with the help and guidance of hints and targeted feedback—ensuring every problem counts as a true learning experience. Provide tools and resources for active learning A number of new features are designed to help instructors create a more active environment in the classroom. Tools and resources are provided within the text, SaplingPlus and instructor resources.

This book presents a selection of tried and trusted laboratory experiments in the field of biochemistry. The experiments are described in detail and can be used directly or in a modified form. They are grouped according to a broad range of biochemical disciplines which allows those responsible for arranging practical classes to select experiments to complement any given biochemistry course. Suggestions are made for further work in more advanced classes. As well as the practical method the experiments are accompanied by background information, discussion of results, references for further study and illustrations.
