Over the last decade, there has been an increasing amount of scholarship focused on race and food inequity. Much of this research is focused on the United States and its densely populated urban centers. Looking deeply into Black women's roles—economically, environmentally, and socially—in food and agriculture systems in the Caribbean, Africa, and the United States, the contributors address the ways Black women, both now and in the past, have used food as a part of community building and sustenance. They also examine matrilineal food-based education; the importance of Black women's social, cultural, and familial networks in addressing nutrition and food insecurity; the ways gender intersects with class and race globally when thinking about food; and how women-led science and technology initiatives can be used to create healthier and more just food systems. Contributors include Agnes Atia Apusigah, Neela Badrie, Kenia-Rosa Campo, Dara Cooper, Kelsey Emard, Claudia J. Ford, Hanna Garth, Shelene Gomes, Veronica Gordon, Wendy-Ann Isaac, Lydia Kwoyiga, Gloria Sanders McCutcheon, Eveline M. F. W. Sawadogo/Compaore, Ashante M. Reese, Sakiko Shiratori, shakara tyler, and Marquitta Webb.

My food memories stem way back to when I was a child where traditions and family hugely influence the way I cook. My mother introduced me to the markets and farms at a young age, exposing me to the concept of paddock to plate. “Watch and learn,” mom would always say. I guess I did. Now living in Australia and travelling far and wide back to Singapore and beyond, I cook with inspiration from the best seasonal ingredients I find but always with a very strong sense of Asian flavours and more importantly, the respect for food acquired through my upbringing. Some of the best times for me have been with friends and family in my kitchen and around the dinner table. In this book, I embrace differences and disregard cultural boundaries. Having grown up in multicultural Singapore, where food is all about sharing and feasting and a way of bringing people together, I share with you the food I love to eat – from my Laksa Roast Chicken, to my Lemon Cake with Brandied Prunes, my scrumptious Chicken and Crispy Noodle Slaw, and my Mom’s Apple Pie. I hope that the recipes in this book will bring to your home as much joy as it has to mine and give you reason to cook for each and every occasion. – the Author

Author Victor Levy gives us a down-to-earth, reassuring, and authoritative window into the world of personal financial planning. At the core of the book is his genuine belief that every financial plan is an honest, living document, and as such, should be worked out comfortably in the heart of the home--at the kitchen table. He shows us just how a plan is done, and how--with the right kind of planner--we'll never need to feel alone as we take on our financial future. Levy underscores the empathetic, professional, and highly supportive nature of the ideal planner. He obviously loves his topic and is clearly someone whose vocation is in planning and helping others. Through the story of a fictional dentist and his relatable extended family, the author painlessly introduces us to official forms, agendas, memoranda, and other documents that in any other setting might seem overwhelming. But the progress of the family as they work toward their financial freedom simultaneously provides us with an easy-to-understand lesson on attaining that same confidence and peace of mind.
