Grandpa John’s Journal By John Lawrence Since retiring in 1997, John Lawrence has been a reporter for his local newspaper for more than fifteen years and some of his more contentious articles are included here. Mr. Lawrence has been writing his journal for more than fifty years. This collection of his works contains many of the children’s stories he wrote for his grandchildren. His stories feature their personas and vary from whodunits to little league baseball. Additionally, Mr. Lawrence has included significant moments in his intriguing biography, beginning with his own immigrant father. The untimely death of his mother at a relatively young age left an indelible mark and his writings reflect the trauma. There are also samples of Mr. Lawrence's poetry - both humorous and pithy, together with examples of his thought-provoking philosophical stories. Far-out science fiction lends some variance to your experience while reading this interesting little book.

2018 Eureka! Nonfiction Children's Book Honor Award, presented by the California Reading Association When the rules kept Charlie Sifford from playing in the Professional Golf Association, he set out to change them. Charlie Sifford loved golf, but in the 1930's only white people were allowed to play in the Professional Golf Association. Sifford had won plenty of Black tournaments, but he was determined to break the color barrier in the PGA. In 1960 he did, only to face discrimination from hotels that wouldn't rent him rooms and clubs that wouldn't let him use the same locker as the white players. But Sifford kept playing, becoming the first Black golfer to win a PGA tournament and eventually ranking among the greats in golf.

"In 1913 the world's finest golfers gathered at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, to compete in golf's national championship, the U.S. Open. Joining them was a little-known amateur, twenty-year-old Francis Ouimet, who lived across the street from the course and had taught himself to play by sneaking onto the fairways with the only golf club he owned. He competed against his idols in front of a crowd that grew from a handful of spectators to a horde of thousands as he and his four-foot-tall caddie, ten-year-old Eddie Lowery, attempted to pull off the impossible. Along the way, they forged a lifelong friendship"--From publisher description.

To nine-year-old Willie Powell, there was no prettier sight than the smooth grass lawns of Edgewater Golf Cource. He had been so eager to see them that he'd run seven miles to where the course was situated outside of town. But his elation didn't last. When he asked two golfers if they'd teach him the game, one man responded by saying, 'Son, didn't anyone ever tell you that your kind is not welcome here?' In the 1920's there was no place for Willie, or any black person, on a golf cource. It was a game for white people only, at least in America. But his enthusiasm for golf and his belief in what he knew to be right drove Willie Powell to change that, and to change minds.

From the author of Paper Lion What happens when a weekend athlete – of average skill at best – joins the professional golf circuit? George Plimpton spent a month of self-imposed torture on the PGA tour to find out, meeting amateurs, pros, caddies, officials, fans and hangers-on along the way. In The Bogey Man we find golf legends, adventurers, stroke-saving theories, superstitions, and other golfing lore, and best of all, Plimpton’s thoughts and experiences – frustrating, humbling and, sometimes, thrilling – from the first tee to the last green.
