Methods of mathematical modelling applied in contemporary computational mechanics can be divided into purely numerical and analytical-numerical procedures. In this book, the first part is a general presentation of the boundary collocation approach and its numerous variants and in the second part the method is applied to many engineering problems.

The boundary integral equation (BIE) method has been used more and more in the last 20 years for solving various engineering problems. It has important advantages over other techniques for numerical treatment of a wide class of boundary value problems and is now regarded as an indispensable tool for potential problems, electromagnetism problems, heat transfer, fluid flow, elastostatics, stress concentration and fracture problems, geomechanical problems, and steady-state and transient electrodynamics. In this book, the author gives a complete, thorough and detailed survey of the method. It provides the only self-contained description of the method and fills a gap in the literature. No-one seriously interested in eigenvalue problems of elasticity or in the boundary integral equation method can afford not to read this book. Research workers, practising engineers and students will all find much of benefit to them.Contents: Introduction. Part I. Applications of Boundary Integral Equation Methods to Eigenvalue Problems of Elastodynamics. Fundamentals of BIE Methods for Elastodynamics. Formulation of BIEs for Steady-State Elastodynamics. Formulation of Eigenvalue Problems by the BIEs. Analytical Treatment of Integral Equations for Circular and Annular Domains. Numerical Procedures for Eigenvalue Problems. Numerical Analysis of Eigenvalue Problems in Antiplane Elastodynamics. Numerical Analysis of Eigenvalue Problems in Elastodynamics. Appendix: Dominant mode analysis around caverns in a semi-infinite domain. Part II. Applications of BIE Methods to Eigenvalue Problems of Thin Plates. Fundamentals of BIE Methods for Thin Plates. Formulation of BIEs for Thin Plates and Eigenvalue Problems. Numerical Analysis of Eigenvalue Problems in Plate Problems. Indexes.

I did not meet my parents, aside from the early weeks after I was born, until I was eight. I dont think that I ever thought about them or wondered about what they were like while I was being moved about from relative to relative in villages in the county of Haiyen Xian, Zhejiang Province. As I Remembered presents a picture of what it was like to grow up in the midst of the turbulence and turmoil of the Sino-Japanese war and the conflict between the Nationalists and Communists for control of China. Young Stanley Chen went to live with his aunt and uncle two weeks after his birth due to his parents involvement in the war. When his uncle died, he was sent to live with his grandfather for a short while and then to another uncle and aunt. Once reunited with his parents and his siblings, he began a more traditional family life with them in China. His memoir traces his life, describing his schooling and ultimately to his journey to the United States, where he made a new life for himself. His ties to his family and China remain strong, as does his life in the States.

The analysis of plates and shells under static and dynamic loads is of greatinterest to scientists and engineers both from the theoretical and the practical viewpoint. The Boun- dary Element Method (BEM) has some distinct advantages over domain techniques such as the Finite Difference Method (FDM) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) for a wide class of structuralanalysis problems. This is the first book to deal specifically with the analysis of plates and shells by the BEM and to cover all aspects of their behaviour, and combi- nes tutorial and state-of-the-art articles on the BEM as ap- plied to plates and shells. It aims to inform scientists and engineers about the use and the advantages of this techni- que, the most recent developments in the field and the per- tinent literature for further study.
