The fifth edition of the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology builds upon the solid foundation of the previous editions, which have proven to be a mainstay for chemists, biochemists, and engineers at academic, industrial, and government institutions since publication of the first edition in 1949. The new edition includes necessary adjustments and modernisation of the content to reflect changes and developments in chemical technology. Presenting a wide scope of articles on chemical substances, properties, manufacturing, and uses; on industrial processes, unit operations in chemical engineering; and on fundamentals and scientific subjects related to the field. The Encyclopedia describes established technology along with cutting edge topics of interest in the wide field of chemical technology, whilst uniquely providing the necessary perspective and insight into pertinent aspects, rather than merely presenting information. * Set began publication in January 2004 * Over 1,000 articles * More than 600 new or updated articles * 27 volumes

This first edition of Testing Tribocorrosion of Passivating Materials Supporting Research and Industrial Innovation: A Handbook treats in a clear, concise, and practical manner an important material degradation and protection matter. It is designed as a handbook and provides a well structured approach of the basics needed to investigate the tribocorrosion behavior of passivating materials, and to conduct in a correct way a laboratory investigation on it. It provides answers on practical and theoretical approaches of tribocorrosion phenomena to engineers and medical persons involved with material assemblies subjected to aggressive environmental and mechanical conditions. For academic researchers it is a pertinent tool assisting them in how they can perform a tribocorrosion investigation and obtain results that are correctly interpreted and can be exchanged. Different parts of the book are illustrated with practical examples. This handbook is truly an indispensable guide for every professional who comes into contact with the complex material degradation and protection processes that take place under combined corrosion and wear conditions. Fields of interest include: transportation (aeronautics, maritime, rail, automotive), medical implants (orthopaedics, dentistry), biochemistry, food production, energy production, and machining. The coordination of this handbook writing was done by Professor Jean-Pierre Celis (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium) and Professor Pierre Ponthiaux (Ecole Centrale Paris, France) assisted by twelve European experts who contributed jointly to the nine chapters of this handbook. Main topics dealt with are tribocorrosion phenomena in medical and industrial sectors, depassivation and repassivation phenomena, impact on synergism in tribocorrosion, specific testing techniques, coupling tribology-to-corrosion, design of a testing protocol, and normalisation.

One measure of a good test procedure ultimately answers the question, "How well does the procedure duplicate field observed results?" This is especially true with test methods for hydraulic components such as pumps due to the unique wear processes at play in today's high performance hydraulic systems.

Leading readers through an extensive compilation of surface modification reactions and processes for specific tribological results, this reference compiles detailed studies on various residual stresses, reaction processes and mechanisms, heat treatment methods, plasma-based techniques, and more, for a solid understanding of surface structural changes that occur during various engineering procedures. This unique book explores topics previously ignored in other texts on surface engineering and tribology, offers guidelines for the consideration and design of wear life and frictional performance, and sections on laser impingement and nanometer scale surface modification.

Use of Bench Tests to Evaluate Water-Glycol Hydraulic Fluid Lubrication

The anti-wear lubrication performance of a series of hydraulic fluids was determined using various bench wear tests including: Four-Ball, Pin-on-V-Block Falex Wear Test, Timken Block-on-Ring, a recently developed cyclic contact stress (3-vane-on-ring) test and the ASTM D-2882 Vickers V-104C vane pump test. These bench tests were selected since they are used in the fluid power industry for fluid selection, qualification and performance troubleshooting. The results of this work showed that none of the bench tests evaluated provided any correlation with the wear rates obtained with the ASTM D-2882 pump test. Bench wear test correlations are possible only if the conditions of the wear test, such as wear contact geometry, loading, speeds, and materials reasonably model the specific wear contact of interest in the hydraulic pump. Even then, the general reliability of the bench testing conditions should first be validated by hydraulic pump testing.
