What happens when the king’s most obedient soldier is issued a wicked command? Benaiah is valiant against men and beasts. He is known for three heroic deeds that lead to his appointment in the elite force of David’s Mighty Men: aggressively going down into a pit on a snowy day to kill a lion; fighting two Moabite ariels; and challenging a giant Egyptian the size of David’s Goliath, armed with only a staff, and killing him with the man’s own spear. When David is crowned king, Benaiah is made his chief bodyguard and eventually head of the whole army of Israel under King Solomon. Reeling from the tragic cost of disobedience when he was young, Benaiah directs his life toward one chief aim: to be found a faithful, loyal, valiant and obedient soldier, servant of the King and follower of Yahweh. But when “just following orders” leads to his part in adultery, murder and death, he questions his life’s direction. If both obedience and disobedience cause death, how can he ever find redemption?

Stop running away from what scares you most and start chasing the God-ordained opportunities that cross your path. They should be so big that without God they would be impossible to achieve. Quit running away from what you’re afraid of. Chase the lion! Change the world! What is your five-hundred-pound dream? In this highly anticipated sequel to his best-selling In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, Mark Batterson invites lion chasers everywhere to chase dreams so impossible that victory demands we face our fears, defy the odds, and hold tight to God. These are the kind of dreams that will make you a bigger person and the world a better place. Based upon 2 Samuel 23, Chase the Lion tells the true story of an ancient warrior named Benaiah who chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day—and then killed it. For most people, that situation wouldn’t just be a problem…it would be the last problem they ever faced. For Benaiah, it was an opportunity to step into his destiny. After defeating the lion, he landed his dream job as King David’s bodyguard and eventually became commander-in-chief of Israel’s army under King Solomon. Written in a way that both challenges and encourages, this revolutionary book will help unleash the faith and courage you need to identify, chase, and catch the five-hundred-pound dreams in your life.

Before joining David, Benaiah hadn't envisioned the discipline and sacrifice required to serve in the army of a king. Neither had he imagined war's reality-the conflict between boredom and apprehension in day-to-day life, the stubbornness of an enemy, the gruesomeness of death. But supporting King David, no matter the cost, was his adventure, and his adventure was only beginning.Living in Hebron with David's army, Benaiah takes the opportunity to visit the nearby tomb of his ancestors-Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Leah. Is he really allowed to go in there? Inside, next to the remains of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, Benaiah asks God a question. Does Benaiah really hear from God?In spite of civil war, international and domestic intrigue, enemy giants, and other opposition, Benaiah attempts to discern what the LORD's answer, given inside the tomb, means. Personally, Benaiah faces demands that he enter the priesthood, while questions of his fitness for leadership bring further complications. How does one conduct his personal life to best serve his king? It's a question we still face today.
