We see them as they are seen in their own circles, in their domestic relations (when human nature unbends itself), in their jovial moods, and in the various phases of social life. It is impossible to under stand a people when they are acting a part, when they are playing an artificial roze as it were; and this is what most natives do when they appear in the presence of a European. It is therefore no exaggeration to say that an illiterate native seldom appears to a European in his true light.
