A month before their wedding, Natasha is on a trip in Jamaica and Michael is in New York when the World Trade Center is attacked. That same day, Natasha endures a private trauma of her own: she is raped by a young man on the shores of the Caribbean. She and Michael are soon reunited, but the horror of that day, and Natasha's inability to speak of it, means that there will forever be a sharp line that divides their relationship into before and after.

Although they are separated in age by almost two decades, when Natasha, a young artist, meets Michael Faulk, a priest struggling with his faith, the stars seem to align. But shortly before their wedding day, as the terrorist attacks of 9/11 shake the country, cracks in their relationship begin to emerge. Cut off from one another for several terrifying hours, Natasha suffers an unimaginable private trauma, and her inability to speak of it inexorably divides their relationship into “before” and “after.” Gorgeously rendered and emotionally powerful, in Before, During, After one of our most distinguished storytellers charts the path of a relationship threatened by secrets.

This is a survival booklet for those who live in earthquake active zones. The information is especially applicable to US citizens who live in California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska and Hawaii. The cities of Memphis and Saint Louis are also sitting in active zones and they are not as prepared for ground motion that topples buildings and freeways as the people in California are prepared. Oklahoma and Texas have been having unnatural earth movements, but for now it seems unlikely a magnitude 6.5 or greater quake will occur in cities in those states. The language is plain and easy to understand. The book is not written to frighten anyone. It is written to help save lives with careful early planning. It should be in libraries for reference.

Calling 911 in an emergency may be the most important thing you ever do. However, it is only one tool to get you and yours through a medical emergency. This guide lays out a smarter process to improve the odds that you and your charge(s) have successful outcomes (i.e., survive) when going through a medical emergency. That means getting yourself, your family, your charges, your home, and your environment ready for a medical emergency. You need to make your home and environment "responder ready." You need to learn how to give critical aid that keeps your charge stable until professional help arrives. You need to know how to get responders to your charge quickly and be as helpful to them as you can while they are there. It's also important to know how to get prompt care at - and "work" - a hospital emergency department. Finally, you need to plan for and get through the recovery process with your charge and take care of yourself, too. That includes learning from the experience so you can improve what you know and better handle things the next time. It also includes assessing the emergency's impact on you, the caregiver, so that you can successfully recover yourself.

Few empirical studies have focused on women in prison. In the last few years, though, a number of studies have demonstrated that there are fundamental differences between male and female prisoners in an ever-changing penal system. Consequently, there has been a need for more comprehensive studies of female offenders for three primary reasons: (1) imperative research gaps remain to be bridged; (2) the female prison experience is not constant; and (3) prison rates for female offenders, especially minority offenders, have increased considerably in the last few years. A central goal of this book, then, is to provide a balance to the existing literature and research on female prisoners in the United States and, to an extent, abroad, focusing primarily on female offenders and using data gathered from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. The book utilizes a comprehensive investigative approach by equating the experience of female offenders by the totality of circumstances within an historical, institutional, political, and ideological context. The critical objective is to offer an inclusive analysis of the things that are considered by female inmates to be the most significant before, during, and after their incarceration, as a way of better understanding the reasons that lead to their first incarceration as well as subsequent incarcerations. By reading this book, the reader will have a greater understanding of the many challenges facing female inmates, as well as the relationship between inmates, correctional officers and, by extension, society in general. Also provided is a series of policy recommendations throughout the book, particularly in the concluding chapter and epilogue.
