This book is a true story created from photos taken of and by (some of them) Mary Lydia Karth. Mary was born on August 6, 1999, and she died on May 8, 2013, due to a car accident, along with her older sister AnnaLeah. Her adventures with Bear are recorded here in memory of the joy she found in living. Photographers Samuel and Naomi Karth (her brother and sister-in-law) captured the discovery of Bear at Woods-on-the-Lake Cottages on the shores of Lake Michigan near Muskegon, Michigan. The photos of Bear's road trip were taken by Mary, and Bear's time with Mary in Texas was photographed by her sister, Susanna Karth. Naomi's mom, Sharon Cole, encouraged us to create a children's book with the photos and we have done so to help us remember the joy which Mary brought to us.

Mary Parish wasn’t your ordinary seventeenth-century woman. She was a “cunning woman,” who spent her time in the realm of magic, interacting with fairies, hunting for buried treasures, and communicating with the spirit world, along with her partner, the young aristocrat Goodwin Wharton. Drawing largely from Goodwin’s personal journals, Frances Timbers reconstructs Mary’s life in this microhistory, and explores themes of class, gender, and relationships in seventeenth-century England. Mary’s story provides insight into magical beliefs and practices of early modern history, and sheds light on how class and gender affected everyday life.
