Battle Station collects short science fiction stories and nonfiction articles about the future of military space operations written by six-time Hugo Award winning author Ben Bova, whose hard science fiction has predicted the Space Race, virtual reality, the Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars), and more. From the Foreword: "The sixteen stories and articles in this book deal with the prospects of war and peace in orbit, together with other glimpses of possible futures. Most of them treat directly with the military aspects of space. Others are devoted to allied facets of the human race’s expansion into the solar system. The nonfiction articles are based on the latest factual information available at the time of their writing, interpreted through my own experiences and opinions. The fiction shows what mere facts cannot: how tomorrow’s technology will affect individual human lives. ... In the sixteen works assembled here you will see: •How an International Peacekeeping Force might actually work--even when betrayed from within. •How energy projectors firing pinpoint beams of light may spell doom for the "ultimate" weapon. •How baseball may become a tool for international diplomacy. •How computers may one day replace politicians. •How telephones may become small enough to be implanted in your skull. •How benign extraterrestrials may have already influenced human history. Nobody wants the military in space. But they will be there. They are already there. If we are wise, we will see to it that they serve to protect the peace and defend the human race against attack." When Pell’s Uncle Colin suggests they take themselves off the grid and leave Fortress City to join him in the Wild West, they leap at the chance. At Colin’s direction, they erase all traces of their existence in Fortress City’s databases and leave under cover of darkness. Almost immediately, they rethink their decision, as they battle hostile monsters and the elements just to stay alive and reach their destination. Shortly after they arrive, Uncle Colin unceremoniously bids them farewell and takes off on a secret mission. The kids, disillusioned, go back to Fortress City, only to be turned away because they are no longer in the system. The kids are forced to return to the homestead and use only their knowledge and resources to fortify it against the elements and hostile invaders. As they struggle to stay alive, they begin to wonder: what is Uncle Colin really up to, and will he ever come back?

In this compelling oral history, Navy medical personnel from World War II recall their experiences and the role Navy medicine played in the great crusade. Physicians, nurses, and corpsmen report the way it was, matter-of-factly, with pride and pathos, but not without humor. These are the veterans whose skills were tested at Pearl Harbor, Corregidor, Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Readers will appreciate as never before the single-minded purpose to which the men and women of Navy medicine dedicated themselves as they healed the wounded aboard vessels under kamikaze attack, in POW camps, and still other appalling circumstances. Former pharmacist's mate Wheeler Lipes describes the time, mythologized by Hollywood and the press, when he removed a shipmate's appendix while his submarine cruised submerged in enemy waters. Dr. Henry Heimlich reveals how a failed chest surgery performed on a wounded Chinese soldier later inspired the lifesaving maneuver that has made his name a household word throughout the world. Cardiologist Dr. Howard Bruenn remembers Franklin D. Roosevelt's last moments at Warm Springs. Stanley Dabrowski recalls the confusion and terror at Iwo Jima as he, a pharmacist's mate, treated his first sucking chest wound under fire. Dr. Ferdinand Berley tells about hearing, while a POW, the Japanese emperor announce the war's end over the radio.

This Civil War history and guide examines a major turning point in cavalry combat and includes a GPS guided tour of the battlefield. Just before dawn on June 9, 1863, Union soldiers materialized from a thick fog near the banks of Virginia's Rappahannock River to ambush sleeping Confederates. The ensuing struggle, which lasted throughout the day, was to be known as the Battle of Brandy Station—the largest cavalry battle ever fought on North American soil. These events marked a major turning point in the Civil War: the waning era of Confederate cavalry dominance in the East gave way to a confident and powerful Union mounted arm. Historian Eric J. Wittenberg meticulously captures the drama and significance of these events in this fascinating volume. The GPS guided tour of the battlefield is supplemented with illustrations and maps by master cartographer Steven Stanley.

The winter of 1862-63 found Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Ambrose Burnside's Army of the Potomac at a standoff along the Rappahannock River in Virginia, following the Union defeat at Fredericksburg. In January 1863 Major General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker relieved the disgraced Burnside, reorganized his troops and instituted company colors, giving his soldiers back their fighting spirit. Lee concentrated on maintaining his strength and fortifications while struggling for supplies. By spring, cavalry units from both sides had taken on increased importance--until the largest cavalry battle of the war was fought, near Brandy Station, Virginia, on June 9, 1863. Researched from numerous contemporary sources, this detailed history recounts the battle that marked the opening of the Gettysburg campaign and Lee's last offensive into the North. Forces commanded by J.E.B. Stuart and Alfred Pleasanton fought indecisively in an area of 70 square miles: Confederate troops maintained possession and counted fewer casualties, yet Union forces had definitely taken the offensive. Historians still debate the significance of the battle; many view it as a harbinger of change, the beginning of dominance by Union horse soldiers and the decline of Stuart's Confederate command.
