Bath University set up its MA course in interpreting and translating in 1966. This volume celebrates forty years of interpreter and translator training at Bath. The papers cover a range of interests, from the history and development of the world-class programme, to the use of IT in the teaching and practice of translation. Issues of teaching technique – in both interpreting and translating - quality assessment in the classroom and the workplace, questions of detailed operation, such as short term memory in interpreting and the evolution of lexis are all tackled. The volume provides an example of the way in which professionals and academics can work together in this highly specialised field. It reflects the principles and practice at the heart of the professions and the issues which relate to training and the work place in the modern world. Contributors include past and present staff and students of the Bath MAIT and professionals and trainers from other well-known institutions.

At the end of his life, Pierre Schaeffer commented that his musical and sound experiments had attempted to go beyond 'do-re-mi'. This had a direct bearing on Einstürzende Neubauten's musical philosophy and work, with the musicians always striving to extend the boundaries of music in sound, instrumentation and purpose. The group are one of the few examples of 'rock-based' artists who have been able to sustain a breadth and depth of work in a variety of media over a number of years while remaining experimental and open to development. Jennifer Shryane provides a much-needed analysis of the group's important place in popular/experimental music history. She illustrates their innovations with found- and self-constructed instrumentation, their Artaudian performance strategies and textual concerns, as well as their methods of independence. Einstürzende Neubauten have also made a consistent and unique contribution to the development of the independent German Language Contemporary Music scene, which although often acknowledged as influential, is still rarely examined.

This comprehensive, authoritative account of tragedy is the culmination of Hans-Thies Lehmann’s groundbreaking contributions to theatre and performance scholarship. It is a major milestone in our understanding of this core foundation of the dramatic arts. From the philosophical roots and theories of tragedy, through its inextricable relationship with drama, to its impact upon post-dramatic forms, this is the definitive work in its field. Lehmann plots a course through the history of dramatic thought, taking in Aristotle, Plato, Seneca, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Lacan, Shakespeare, Schiller, Holderlin, Wagner, Maeterlinck, Yeats, Brecht, Kantor, Heiner Müller and Sarah Kane.

The explosion of interest in the gothic in recent years has coincided with a number of seismic political changes that have reshaped the world as we know it. Neoliberal Gothic explores that world, considering the ways in which the exponential increase in the cultural visibility of the gothic attests to the mode's engagement with the most significant dynamics of our age. These include the triumph of free market economics, the revolution in information and communication technologies, the emergence of global biotechnologies, the increasing power of transnational corporations, the US-led 'War on Terror' and the global financial crisis of 2008. Through analysis of texts drawn from literature, film, television, theatre and the visual arts (from the Europe to South East Asia, Africa to North and South America) the collection examines the ways in which the representational strategies of the gothic mode are ideally suited to an exploration of the dark side of neoliberal enterprise.

Recent Advances in Circuits and Systems brings you a balanced, state-of-the-art presentation of the latest concepts, methods, algorithms, techniques, procedures and applications of the fascinating field of Circuits and Systems. Written by eminent, leading, international experts, the contributors provide up-to-date aspects of topics discussed and present fresh, original insights into their own experience with Circuits and Systems. The main aim of this book is to present most of the new trends and recent advances of the impressive evolution in the discipline of circuits and systems. Special emphasis is given in the interaction between the classic areas of systems theory (feedback control, circuits design, electronics, etc) and the modern techniques of computational intelligence (neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic and expert systems) since this fertile interaction promises to open up new horizons in circuits and systems theory. This book is composed of four parts. Part I is devoted to Circuits and Electronics and also includes Power Systems. Part II refers to Systems Theory and Control (H infinity problems, feedback control, non-linear systems, robust stability and robust control, multivariable systems, hybrid systems and hydraulic systems). Part III presents the latest developments in the Robotics (theory and applications) while Part IV is devoted to Computational Intelligence in Systems Theory.
