When the child Basava was born he did not cry or open his eyes for days. According to Sage Jataveda, who later became his guru, Basava had been in a yogic trance. Basaveshvara was a unique human being, a reformer way ahead of his times. Eight hundred years ago, at a time when society was ridden with the evils of a rigid caste system, he spoke of equality and believed in the emancipation of women.

Basavanna (Basaveshwara) is called "Vishwaguru" because he is believed by his followers to have been the first ever to know the practicality of transcending to Godliness and demonstrating the technique of becoming God through around 800 Sharanas. Basavanna spread the concept of the path of becoming God through four levels of divinity that exists in one's own body- Unmanifest Chaitanya (Guru), Manifest Chaitanya-Shakti (Linga), Consciousness of the manifest chaitanya-shakti in Prana (Jangama), and the Individual consciousness (Jeevatma/Mind). Basavanna taught Sharanas, the technique of transcending the mind with one's own prana through a process of Ishtalinga, Pranalinga and Bhavalinga saadhana and that anybody in the world, irrespective of caste, creed, merit, nationality, etc., can transcend and become God by being in union with prana.

Religion has played a very important role in India from remotest times. It has moulded the individual life and has greatly influenced the social and cultural life also. In fact in India religion has been an inseparable part of the life of an individual as also of the society as a whole. There is religion to believe that even in pre and Post-historical man pursued some religious practices or the other though it is difficult to find out their exact nature. Right from the Vedic day's religion has served as the foundation of social and cultural life of the Indian people1. The Chalukyas were a Scythian race, and derived their origin from one of the four classes of Buddhist followers called Chailaka'. They claimed their descent from Manu through Hariti, and were known as Agnikulas, from their devotion to the worship of fire. They were included in the thirty-six races of the Kshattriyas, and belonged to the lunar family.

The Weaker Sections in general and the Scheduled Castes (Dalits) in particular, have been subjected to exploitation, oppression, humiliation and multiform deprivation that persists even after independence, though with some difference. They have been socially degraded, economically exploited and politically subordinated by the dominant forces in Indian society. They suffered from multiple deprivations and were the victims of 'cumulative domination'. Enraged over this, the Dalits have been developing a new awakening and consciousness and have started various movements all over the country, but more vigorously in Dalit Movement in Karnataka Dr. R. Madhusudhan's work is a painstaking, comprehensive analysis of the diverse forms of protest movements which emerged among the Dalits against the multiple forms of deprivations experienced by them. Dalits have waged struggles against the structures of dominance and control with varying degrees of successes and failures. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive and aggregate level documentation of these struggles, their outcome, etc. as yet. On this count, the present study is timely significant as it fulfils overdue need for the literature on Dalit movement in one of the developed states in India. The author very sensitively endeavours to assess the contribution made by various agencies and also by Dalit themselves to overcome the maladies that afflict Dalits. The book offers a detailed account of the theoretical and empirical dimensions of the issue under discussion.
