Excerpt from The Political and Professional Career of Bartlett Yancey In this issue of the Sprunt Publications appears a contribution from Superintendent George A. Anderson ofcaswell county which will he of interest to all students of North Carolina biography. Of few of the distinguished men of the State has so little been known as of Bartlett Yancey. Mr. Anderson has for a number of years been industriously collecting material bearing upon Vancey's pri vate life and has kindly consented to allow the editors to use his manuscript. A short sketch of Yancey's political career, by one of the editors. Follows, serving as an introduction to the hitherto unpublished letters which make up the rest of the volume. The letters are from the collections of the North Carolina Historical Society and have a double value in that they are illustrative of the regard in which he was held by his contemporaries, and also contain much material of interest concerning the State and National politics of the period. Senator from Georgia, minister to France, cabinet officer, and unsuccessful presidential candidate, William Harris Crawford was one of the major figures of the early republic. Because most of his papers were destroyed by fire during the Civil War period, however, estimates of Crawford's abilities and accomplishments have usually been based on the papers of his political adversaries—notably John Quincy Adams—and few men of his stature have received so little attention from historians. This first full biographical study, drawing on hundreds of documentary collections, many never used in biographies and monographs of the period, throws new light on Crawford's career and his relationships with his contemporaries.

This collection of essays by twenty-nine distinguished scholars provides readers with a complete overview of American politics and policy that can be found in any single volume. These essays reveal that American politics historically is volatile, not given easily to civility, and polarizing; at the same time, they explore important political developments in addressing real issues confronting the nation and the world.
