A teenage lad's fascination with old cars. An even greater fascination with teenage girls. A sad lack of sufficient funds to pursue either interest with much credibility. A conundrum which has challenged car-obsessed male youth the world over since the fateful day in 1885 when Gottleib Daimler's spindly-wheeled creation puttered out of its shed for the first time. Bangers relates how one impoverished would-be Lothario tackled these issues during the late 60s and early 70s. Successes were rare, disasters were commonplace but the adventures on the journey were entertaining and fulfilling – most of the time. An affectionate look back at a less constrained, less self-concious era, Bangers tells the story of a young man fumbling his way towards adulthood through tales of the many old cars that found their way into his life. Each of these crumbling wrecks moved him a fraction further down the path of enlightenment in his attempts to comprehend basic mechanics and female temperament – not that he ever got much beyond scratching the surface of either concept. In fact, 50 odd years and 70 odd cars later, he remains as bemused by it all as he ever was. However, two constants have remained with him throughout. One is the knowledge that he was always far from being alone in his obsession with old motors as a quick glance at the magazine shelves in any newsagent will confirm. The other is that someone, somewhere really ought to try and explain all this to the opposite sex.

What I Do Not Believe, and Other Essays
Author: Norwood Russell Hanson

Fifty years have passed since Norwood Russell Hanson's unexpected death, yet he remains an important voice in philosophy of science. This book is a revised and expanded edition of a collection of Hanson's essays originally published in 1971, edited by Stephen Toulmin and Harry Woolf. The new volume features a comprehensive introduction by Matthew Lund (Rowan University) and two new essays. The first is "Observation and Explanation: A Guide to Philosophy of Science", originally published as a posthumous book by Harper and Row. This essay, written near the end of Hanson’s life, represents his mature philosophy of science. The second new addition, Hanson's essay "The Trial of Galileo", is something of a "lost" work – it was only published in a small run collection on famous trials and was left out of the published lists of Hanson’s works. Ever the outspoken firebrand, Hanson found many lessons and warnings from Galileo's trial that were relevant to Cold War America. This volume not only contains Hanson's best-known work in history and philosophy of science, but also highlights the breadth of his philosophical thought. Hanson balanced extreme versatility with a unified approach to conceptual and philosophical problems. Hanson's central insight is that philosophy and science both strive to render the world intelligible -- the various concepts central to our attempts to make sense of the world are interdependent, and cannot operate, or even be fully understood, independently. The essays included in this collection present Hanson's thinking on religious belief, theory, observation, meaning, cosmology, modality, logic, and philosophy of mind. This collection also includes Hanson's lectures on the theory of flight, Hanson's greatest passion.

What does Vod really think about drink, drugs and Salman Rushdie? And will Kingsley's diary spill his true feelings for Josie? Edited by Oregon, and with contributions from all of the housemates, this is a real guide to student life - the one the preachy brochures and prospectuses don't tell you about. From moving into a student house to fresher's week, from choosing courses to choosing friends, the book records every detail - hilarious, sordid, poignant and triumphant - as the young ones stumble through university life. A scrap book of diary entries, manifestos, diagrams and guidelines it includes: JP's weekly shopping list and first Hollywood screenplay, Josie's student recipes for 'Munge' (and 'Chunge'), Vod's literary criticism and hangover cure, Howard's James Bond fan-fiction, Oregon's literary erotica and Kinglsey's band reviews and critique of the Ultimate Frisbee Society. 'A worthy successor to The Inbetweeners ... the best programme about students since The Young Ones' Daily Telegraph on FRESH MEAT 'I never thought I'd enjoy reliving the abject horror of my student days quite as much as I have' Guardian on Fresh Meat 'This book's main purpose is to encourage having a laugh, but, like the best laughs, it is based on facts that ring true' Evening Standard Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain are British comedy writers, who met whilst studying at Manchester University. They have collaborated on acclaimed television comedy shows such as Smack the Pony, Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look, and the films Magicians and Four Lions.
