Excerpt from Baltimore County, 1929 The present volume on Baltimore County is the eleventh of the series of reports dealing with the physical features of the several counties of Maryland. In it are considerations not only of the geology and mineral resources but also the physiography, soils, climate, magnetic declination, and forests. The Introduction, by Edward W. Berry, consists of an historical review of the development of knowledge concerning the physical features of Baltimore County and a bibliography of the more important maps and reports dealing with the area. It shows that the growth of knowledge has covered a long period of preliminary exploration, begin ning with the work of Captain John Smith and culminating in the refined investigations of the complicated problems of the crystalline rocks of the Piedmont. The earlier work by Tyson and others Without modern technique shows an intuitive understanding of the region of high char acter. The later modern investigations have been by a great many workers, beginning with the classic studies of the late Professor Williams and numerous studies by students at the Johns Hopkins University. The account of The Physiography of Baltimore County by Eleanora Bliss Knopf represents an exhaustive mature investigation of the surface features of the county in connection with the topographic development of the whole terrane bordering the central Atlantic coast, This report is based upon new methods of research and is not only a clear, consistent explanation of the present surface features of Baltimore County but a distinct contribution to the scientific interpretation of the origin of the various terraces and gorges of the Piedmont area extending from New Jersey southward. The Geology of the Crystalline Rocks of Baltimore County by Eleanora Bliss Knopf and Anna I. Jonas represents the results of years of study. The authors undertook this work with a knowledge of the detailed studies and general interpretation of the region by Williams, Mathews. Then she plucked an order of chard from the hotbed for Mrs. Creedon, washed it, tied it in a paper bag and laid it in the bottom of a basket, with the two plump fowl atop it. Angelo, dozing now over the barbaric monotony of his music, was easily hushed to sleep. Eda snuggled him into the basket and set out for the Avenue. Excerpt from Baltimore, or Long, Long Time Ago IF the accompanying jeu d'esprit, or of sentiment, or of a little, and very little of either, especially of the former, be not out of place, among the more serious and important contributions laid before the Maryland Historical Society; do me the favor to read it, at your next meeting; not as matter for its archives, but for the amusement, and in some instances, for the sensibilities of the members, among whom are doubtless some who remember Doctor Mann's corner, as the Jews of old remembered Zion; though they have not, in this case, a harp like David's to commemorate it, or the physical exile of the author of these lamentations, to hallow its reminiscence, as it is hallowed to him. But they have the moral separation, as well as himself. The alienation, of time, circumstance, and death, from early incidents and associations, which is, to the a 'ections, what distance is to the body; nay, infinitely more, for material space may be overcome, and corporeal disunion have an end; but where is the Promethean fire to rekindle the loved and lost of by-gone days? Where, but in memories, such as these humble stanzas may excite, to melancholy, but not unpleasing action, the com panions of our youth - the events of a period, when to exist is to be happy; and when life is presented to us in colors which, like those of. Home to established African American institutions and communities, Washington, D.C., offered women in the New Negro movement a unique setting for the fight against racial and gender oppression. Colored No More traces how African American women of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth century made significant strides toward making the nation's capital a more equal and dynamic urban center. Treva B. Lindsey presents New Negro womanhood as a multidimensional space that included race women, blues women, mothers, white collar professionals, beauticians, fortune tellers, sex workers, same-gender couples, artists, activists, and innovators. Drawing from these differing but interconnected African American women's spaces, Lindsey excavates a multifaceted urban and cultural history of struggle toward a vision of equality that could emerge and sustain itself. Upward mobility to equal citizenship for African American women encompassed challenging racial, gender, class, and sexuality status quos. Lindsey maps the intersection of these challenges and their place at the core of New Negro womanhood.

At the turn of the 20th century, the significant social, political, and technological changes that were occurring in society also heralded new roles and functions for journalism as a profession and as an aspect of a burgeoning mass mediated society. Redefining Journalism in the Era of the Mass Press, 1880-1920 examines journalism’s roles, products, and practices during an era of rapid change and transformation, and how these changes within the field reflected broader social, political, economic, and technological changes. The era of the mass press was one within which the speed and impact of change both reflected and contributed to transformations in journalism – transformations that would endure until the rise of the Internet disrupted the field once again. This book was originally published as a special issue of Media History.
