The 700 islands, cays and islets of the Bahamas are scattered across over 96,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Only 23 of the islands are inhabited, and amongst these, visitors will find an intriguing blend of the old and new, the expected and unexpected. The character of each island is different: there is San Salvador, with its turquoise waters that are perfect for diving, Inagua with its untamed wilderness and renowned wildlife, Grand Bahama with its glitz and glamour and New Providence with the bustling cosmopolitan capital, Nassau. Of those that travel in search of a paradise, many find it in the Bahamas. In the Bahamas Sketchbook, acclaimed watercolour artist Graham Byfield masterfully captures the spirit and character of these fames isles, transporting readers to this tranquil and captivating place where classic architecture is found alongside palm-fringed beaches.

A richly illustrated look at how travel influenced the work of renowned contemporary artist Betye Saar Betye Saar (b. 1926) is an artist whose assemblages tell visual stories and convey powerful political messages. A leading figure of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s, she works with found objects—many of which she gathers on her extensive travels—to explore themes like symbolic mysticism, feminism, racism, and Eurocentric chauvinism. Betye Saar: Heart of a Wanderer sheds new light on Saar’s unique creative process, her trips around the world, and the diverse ways in which her artworks engage with global histories of travel and forced migration. It presents how the artist’s work conjures the transporting experience of a voyage to a faraway place. This beautifully illustrated book draws on original, in-depth interviews with Saar and the companions who accompanied the artist in her travels across four continents over several decades. Essays by leading scholars contextualize Saar’s journeys within her broader life and career, as well as how her practice fits into broader traditions—such as scrapbooking—in African American visual culture. In addition to providing this context, this book explores how Saar’s assemblage practice both echoes and provides a critical counterpoint to the collecting practices of Gilded Age American art collectors like Isabella Stewart Gardner. Featuring a wealth of previously unpublished material—including almost thirty travel sketchbooks and two dozen finished assemblages—Betye Saar: Heart of a Wanderer provides a fresh look at a groundbreaking American artist while offering a timely social history of the impact of travel on the African American experience. Menorca is one of the most magical of all the Mediterranean islands. The island's south coast beaches, its wild northern coastline, its climate, the light, the rich mosaic of natural habitats that teem with life, wildflowers, song birds, butterflies all add up to make this perhaps the most beautiful place we've ever seen....This marvellous book is a step in the right direction by highlighting so many beautiful, and even in some cases relatively unknown, parts of the island.

Great design is something that makes you pause and think. That’s because there is a pure concept behind that design. Without a strong concept, design is merely an arrangement of elements within the parameters of a given format, resulting in design that is purely decorative. Void of the inspiration that makes design transcendent, the audience is left disengaged and intellectually/emotionally indifferent. Stanley Hainsworth, a designer who is known for design built on strong concepts, takes readers on an unprecedented visual journey through the minds of today’s best design thinkers via interviews and project case studies, exploring and revealing the sources of the concepts behind the projects. This book is a visual and informational feast.
