Colonial Trauma

Colonial Trauma
Author: Karima Lazali
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons

Genre: Political Science
ISBN: 1509545786

Colonial Trauma is a path-breaking account of the psychosocial effects of colonial domination. Following the work of Frantz Fanon, Lazali draws on historical materials as well as her own clinical experience as a psychoanalyst to shed new light on the ways in which the history of colonization leaves its traces on contemporary postcolonial selves. Lazali found that many of her patients experienced difficulties that can only be explained as the effects of “colonial trauma” dating from the French colonization of Algeria and the postcolonial period. Many French feel weighed down by a colonial history that they are aware of but which they have not experienced directly. Many Algerians are traumatized by the way that the French colonial state imposed new names on people and the land, thereby severing the links with community, history, and genealogy and contributing to feelings of loss, abandonment, and injustice. Only by reconstructing this history and uncovering its consequences can we understand the impact of colonization and give individuals the tools to come to terms with their past. By demonstrating the power of psychoanalysis to illuminate the subjective dimension of colonial domination, this book will be of great interest to anyone concerned with the long-term consequences of colonization and its aftermath.

All good parents desire the best for their children. They want their children to learn and grow to the best of their capabilities. However, not every child learns at the same rate or even in the same manner. Having worked with special needs children for more than two decades as a developmental therapist in the Illinois Early Intervention Program, I recognize that many parents are concerned about how to work with their children and what toys to provide in order to help their children meet their age-appropriate milestones. The Early Intervention Program is a state funded program that serves children with developmental disabilities and delays from birth to three years of age. The truth is that the market is flooded with toys for children. Unfortunately, some toys simply entertain children instead of educating them during these formidable years. With so many toys in the marketplace, it can be challenging to decide which ones are best to help your children reach their fullest potential during their first three years of life. As an educator and a therapist, my Ultimate Toy Bag is filled with products that I found to be the most beneficial for children from birth to three years. This book will help you create an Ultimate Toy Bag for your child's first three years of development. While it is impossible to provide an exhaustive list of the perfect toys, use this book as a guide to find the perfect tools to assist your child and increase their learning capabilities.

When players play, there is a transactional process at work, whether for children on a teeter-totter or pandas playing with peers. In this edited volume, nine experts on play show how play transactions are an important dynamic of play across cultures, age groups, even species. A rich array of play contexts is evident across the nine chapters, encompassing varied continents, age groups, and sorts of players. The play processes of giant pandas, of home-visiting therapists, of Polynesian women, and of autistic kids are included here. The healthy interchange of ideas about play, one of the hallmarks of the Association for the Study of Play, is a process that is cultivated in this new volume.
