By the time federal prosecutors announced an end to their investigation of Oklahoma local government in the early 1980s, more than 200 people had been convicted in 60 counties. Most were county commissioners who had been taking kickbacks paid by suppliers on orders for county road-building supplies.

At War with Corruption began as a biography of Bill Price, the U.S. attorney and Republican candidate for high office who spearheaded prosecutions in the most pervasive public corruption spectacle in American history: the Oklahoma county commissioner scandal. Price’s determination to root out the rascals and restore faith in governance branded him as the biggest corruption buster in the state’s history. Price’s career in law and politics serves as a portal into corruption in Oklahoma. Episodes in that narrative include land swindles (soonerism) at the dawn of Oklahoma history; theft of Native Americans’ property and steamrolling of their cultures that reached a nadir in the Osage murders; the Supreme Court scandal of 1964–65; Leo Winters’ alleged misuse of state taxes (what was the treasurer doing with the people’s money?); Governor David Hall’s trial and conviction on charges of extortion; prosecutions of drug syndicates, Penn Square Bank insiders, and Oklahoma Corporation Commissioners on the take; and the systemic bribery in county governance that inspired this book. Price shatters the myth that Oklahomans have been uniquely tolerant of, and susceptible to, corruption. He blames structural flaws and inadequate legislation for tempting law-abiding citizens to heed the call of their darker angels. Although Price failed in his gubernatorial and congressional campaigns, he has influenced policy through philanthropies that set a high bar for civic engagement. At War with Corruption reveals the sinister side of human nature. Yet its intention is not to depress, but rather to uplift and to show what is possible when public servants work together to frame effective laws and promote justice.

"Knocking the gun away, running into the bank, leaving a trail of blood behind, not realizing he had been shot. "Heading into the Bob [Bob Marshall Wilderness] with a packhorse in tow. "With my rope stretched tight across the swollen creek, me on one side, the calf on the other." "Cross hairs at the top of his back, the buckskin butt patch fills my scope." "Prying eyes might find us a la naturale, refreshing ourselves in the cool waters of a high mountain lake." A collection of true-life adventures, tall tales, with a few out and out lies thrown in just for fun. Oh, what a grand adventure it all has been, growing up and old, running the mountains along the continental divide just outside the smoky little village of Lincoln Montana.

An insightful and wide-ranging look at one of America’s most popular genres of music, Walking the Line: Country Music Lyricists and American Culture examines how country songwriters engage with their nation’s religion, literature, and politics. Country fans have long encountered the concept of walking the line, from Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line” to Waylon Jennings’s “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line.” Walking the line requires following strict codes, respecting territories, and, sometimes, recognizing that only the slightest boundary separates conflicting allegiances. However, even as the term acknowledges control, it suggests rebellion, the consideration of what lies on the other side of the line, and perhaps the desire to violate that code. For lyricists, the line presents a moment of expression, an opportunity to relate an idea, image, or emotion. These lines represent boundaries of their kind as well, but as the chapters in this volume indicate, some of the more successful country lyricists have tested and expanded the boundaries as they have challenged musical, social, and political conventions, often reevaluating what “country” means in country music. From Jimmie Rodgers’s redefinitions of democracy, to revisions of Southern Christianity by Hank Williams and Willie Nelson, to feminist retellings by Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton to masculine reconstructions by Merle Haggard and Cindy Walker, to Steve Earle’s reworking of American ideologies, this collection examines how country lyricists walk the line. In weighing the influence of the lyricists’ accomplishments, the contributing authors walk the line in turn, exploring iconic country lyrics that have tested and expanded boundaries, challenged musical, social, and political conventions, and reevaluated what “country” means in country music.

As the aged, ashen-colored helicopter continued to spiral out of control minutes away from crashing into the ice-cold water surface of the Sea of Japan, seven souls remained on board. In the cockpit, the stalwart, veteran pilot, CWO4 Hector Valor, along with copilot, 2nd Lt. Joshua Cherry, were trying desperately to regain control of the failed aircraft. This fact-based, suspense, and romantic-full novel is a story about time and memories of a brotherhood that were constantly being stalked by a wicked and sinister brigadier general from another country. The time was the postVietnam War era, and fellow Americans were still struggling with resolutions that came about from the conflict in Southeast Asia. It was a time of healing and coming together as a nation, a time when America had just finished two decades of ups and downs yet continued to remain one of the greatest nations in the world. Americans were poised and ready to get on with the business at hand of redirecting their efforts to keeping our nation strong and healthy. Furthermore, it is about fact and memory of four army paratroopers who established a lifelong commitment of support for each other, a brotherhood, if you will, made one for all and all for one, A TONTINE.

It was complicated, it was also just the beginning. A decision. A simple choice. There is always that one moment in life where things could have been different. That one moment where you could have chosen a path that would lead you down a certain road. A different life. It was easier to pretend that we were still best friends, and that she was my girl and I was her boy. Pretending was better than knowing the truth... I. Ruined. Us. I had her. I lost her. I love her. All I did was complicate us.
