Excerpt from Baccalaureate Sermons IN preparing these sermons for republication, I find that in some instances a favorite illustration, text of Scripture, or subsidiary thought occurs more than once. But as there is, as I believe, no duplication of a subject or of a continuous train of thought, I have pre ferred to let the sermons reappear in their original form. If they can in any humble measure serve the purpose with which they were written, the author can have no greater joy than in thus renewing and con tinning the chosen work of his years of active service in the University. Excerpt from Baccalaureate Sermons, and Occasional Discourses The word 'hero, ' does not occur in the Bible. Nothing can be more opposite to its spirit than that self-sufficiency, and recklessness of human rights and sufferings, which arc commonly associated with this term. Still, there are no higher examples of a true heroism than the Bible presents. In the text, and the chapter from which it is taken, we have an account of great and heroic exploits, performed indeed in ancient times, but such as we should be glad to see emulated, such as ought to be emulated in the midst of the light and advantages of our day. We have a right to expect, as the stream of time rolls on and pours its accumulated wealth at the feet of new generations, that there shall not only be an increase in the knowledge of nature, but that there shall be, at least, no failure in the breadth and compass of a comprehensive wisdom, or in the might of a true manhood that is ready to do and to suffer in the cause of humanity and of God. Excerpt from The College and the Higher Life: Baccalaureate Sermons The denominational paper, the Universalist, in which this report is printed, adds some words of further description that are of interest in the same connection. He knows by experience the feelings and the needs of those who go to Tufts for an education. As President he will have a sympathetic appreciation of the status of his scholars that must greatly conduce to an influence over them for good. Further, he is proud of his Alma Mater, and from the day of his graduation to the present hour chief among his aspirations and his hopes has been a desire to see Tufts taking its place among the first universities of the land. He is a speaker, and in any assembly of educationists he will honor the school he represents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christian Character: Baccalaureate Sermons HE following sermons are collected and given to the public in response to the wishes of many friends. They vary in length and completeness accord ing to the varying ability of the reporters to seize the rapid utterances of the speaker; for, with one or two exceptions, they were prepared for publication from newspaper reports. But the shortest and most imperfect of the series present the leading thoughts and the progress of the argument. The editor has not, of course, felt at liberty to add to them, except at occasional defective points to complete the obvious intent of the speaker; nor has anything been left out, except occasional repetitions of statement or expression. Even these redundancies are sometimes left as characteristic of the preacher's more familiar public addresses; like the amiable defects of our friends, they will not be unwelcome to those who sought and valued his pulpit teachings. Excerpt from In the Light of Faith: Baccalaureate Sermons and Educational Addresses Christian really means when we Speak of Christian Education. While some problems treated may seem purely educational, yet the attitude which is taken has its deepest foundations in a distinctively Christian point of View. Excerpt from Baccalaureate and Convocation Sermons Year by year, for many years, graduates have been going forth from the schools over which it has been my privilege to preside, to take their places in the strenuous activities of this busy world. In all I have had the honor to act officially in sending forth thirty-one graduating classes: eight from schools in Kentucky; fourteen from Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio; four from the Texas Christian University, and five from Oklahoma Christian University. It often fell upon me to preach the baccalaureate and convocation sermons. It was the universal custom at Hiram for the president to give both of these addresses, from which custom I did not depart while I was president of that institution. These sermons were necessarily carefully prepared, and embraced my best thoughts along lines that I deemed most advantageous to those entering upon student life, and to those going out as graduates to do the work of life. I have decided to put these sermons in book form, believing that they will be appreciated by my old students and be, as I trust, of some benefit to them. Furthermore, this is getting to be a day of graduating addresses. High schools are springing up all over the country, offering courses almost equal to the college courses of fifty years ago.
