Excerpt from Axel, and Other Poems In offering the following specimens of Swedish Poetry to the Public, the Translator has been careful to select those poems which, with the exception of the two ballads from the "Frithiof Saga," have not, as far as he is aware, been hitherto rendered into English. It has been the Translator's aim to follow the originals as closely as possible, both as regards rhythm and imagery; and it would be a satisfaction to him to think that the experiment he has ventured to make may be the means of inducing the English student of languages to turn his attention to a class of poetry which has hitherto scarcely received the attention it deserves. In the 1930s, Finnish poet Bo Carpelan found mention of his great-uncle Axel in a biography of the composer Jean Sibelius. This friendship is the genesis of Carpelan's fictional diary of Axel's dual obsession with music and with a man who, unlike him, had enough confidence in his creativity to compose his own. In Carpelan's novel, set during Finland's struggle to escape Russian domination, young Axel's life is full of melancholic introspection communicated only to his diary. The short entries describe his adolescent antagonism toward healthier and more joyous peers, and his embarrassment at his futile attempts to coax beauty from his violin. His unrelenting disappointment and self-effacement give way after meeting his hero Sibelius, as Axel's search for meaning and an aesthetic ideal becomes forever linked to the unfolding of the composer's musical genius.

Excerpt from Axel and Valborg: A Tragedy in Five Acts; And Other Poems Pierce Butler then determined to go out to Turkey, for the special purpose of volunteering his ministra tions to the sick and wounded soldiers of our army. Such Christian service seemed the most fitting tribute he could pay to the memory of his lamented brothers. He accordingly proceeded to Constantinople in December 1854, and shortly afterwards accepted the offer of an appointment as one of the chaplains to our army in the Crimea. In discharging this duty, his gentle, genial manners and amiable disposition won the hearts of officers and men; and those now living who were with the Second Division in the camp before Sevastopol will ever retain a grateful recollection of his ministrations. In 1861 he married, and settled at the family living of Ulcombe in Kent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
