This book addresses two critical problems that plague materials that make up components in both desalination and cooling water systems: corrosion, and fouling. The book addresses various types and components of industrial desalination technologies with solutions for controlling corrosion, scaling and biofouling. Issues unique to desalination systems, vital for the production of clean water, are considered as well. Green technologies are discussed throughout, along with environmental and economic considerations. The book presents solutions to the problems encountered by internal and external parts of these systems and will aid professionals that design, operate, and maintain them. It will be valuable to professionals in the materials, corrosion, electrochemical and wastewater industries, as well as chemical engineers. Addresses the corrosion issues facing the conventional and modern water desalination systems; Discusses the causes and remediation of problems caused by corrosion, scaling, and biofouling in water treatment; Offers green solutions, thereby minimizing environmental impact while increasing control and productivity of water systems; Suitable for professionals working with water desalination plants, materials scientists and corrosion engineers.

The thesis deals with the galvanic behaviour of two couples under the Arabian Gulf sea water conditions. These couples are: ( I ) Molybdenum containing stainless steels/Copper-base alloys and (II) Zinc/carbon steel The material covers variety of topics. These comprise a detailed survey of desalination plants regarding history, material selection, desalination techniques with an emphasis on evaporation (MSF and MEB distillation), production of distilled water economic aspects, corrosion assessment of different parts of the distillers and remedies for corrosion. The corrosion problems have been treated from a theoretical basis, including a literature survey and laboratory scale experimentation. The galvanic study of Case (I) identifying the effects of alloy type, temperature, cathode/anode area ratio, stagnation and stirring conditions on both the galvanic potentials and galvanic currents of the various couples. The results were interpreted in the context of the modern theory of corrosion. Conclusions and recommendations were given which are applicable to desalination plants. The study also included the evaluation of the Mo-stainless steels regarding their resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The results were quantified using their pitting resistance equivalent (PRE) values. The galvanic study of Case (II) involved the evaluation of the effects of the presence in the water of bicarbonate-, chloride-, sulphate-, nitrate ions, medium temperature, presence of metallic ions and aeration or deaeration on the efficiency of Zinc (as a sacrificial anode) in the couple Zinc/carbon steel. The results were treated as a zinc potential reversal phenomenon. This enabled the formulation of various conclusions that are applicable to zinc sacrificial anodes used in the cathodic protection systems of carbon steel water boxes of turbine oil condensers.

The use of seawater desalination is an increasingly sought after alternative for new drinking water supplies in coastal areas, particularly as desalination becomes more economical. This new manual of practice parlays lessons learned from recent studies and global seawater desalination projects into guidance for desalination facilities that are reliable, economical, and environmentally sound. This new manual is specifically designed to help water utility managers and design engineers understand desalination–the technologies, the infrastructure, and the costs–to make informed decisions from planning through treatment plant construction. It explains environmental and ecological impacts of desalination plants, seawater intakes, and the disposal of concentrate discharges back into the ocean. Chapters describe the minerals and other constituents that determine source water quality and, therefore, treatment approaches.

To protect metals or alloys from corrosion, some methods can be used such as isolating the structure from the aggressive media or compensating the loss of electrons from the corroded structure. The use of corrosion inhibitors may include organic and inorganic compounds that adsorb on the metallic structure to isolate it from its surrounding media to decrease oxidation-reduction processes. This book collects new developments about corrosion inhibitors and their recent applications.

The global economic cost from corrosion is estimated to be more than US$2.5 trillion, or equivalent to 3.4% of the global GDP. Corrosion costs the U.S. economy close to $300 billion per annum. About 100 billion dollars these costs could be remediated by application of corrosion-resistant materials and the use of corrosion-related technical practices such as corrosion inhibitors. A corrosion inhibitor is a chemical compound that, when added to a liquid or gas, decreases the corrosion rate of a metal, or its alloy that comes into contact with the fluid or vapour. These chemicals are both organic and inorganic compounds, which generally form a protective layer on the metal surface. Some corrosion inhibitors contain heavy metals are harmful to human health, toxic to plants, environments, and animals. They also have adverse effect on the ecology of the receiving environment and on surface and ground water quality. This book focuses on the use of Vappro VBCI Corrosion Inhibitors which are biodegradable, less toxic, and environmentally friendly. The authors believe in creating a cleaner, greener, and better tomorrow for our children and children’s children.
