(Cont.) In addition the calibration circuitry provides greater accuracy in the modulation than what is possible via offline methods of calibration. The calibration circuit works with M-ary GFSK as well as 2 level GFSK. The automatic calibration circuit has been implemented in two forms to prove its operation. The first version is a circuit board level implementation with a center frequency of around 60 MHz. The second implementation of the system is in a full custom 0.6,Lm BiCMOS integrated circuit. The integrated circuit contains the complete synthesizer with automatic calibration and operates in the 1.88 GHz frequency band used by the Digital European Cordless Telephone (DECT) standard. A data rate of 2.5 Mbps using 2 level GFSK and 5.0 Mbps using 4 level GFSK has been achieved with a power consumption of 78 mW.

This book explains concepts behind fractional subsampling-based frequency synthesis that is re-shaping today’s art in the field of low-noise LO generation. It covers advanced material, giving clear guidance for development of background-calibrated environments capable of spur-free synthesis and wideband phase modulation. It further expands the concepts into the field of subsampling polar transmission, where the newly developed architecture enables unprecedented spectral efficiency levels, unquestionably required by the upcoming generation of wireless standards.

Abstract: As radio design complexity increases and features sizes decrease, more innovative solutions are explored to ensure analog circuit designs meet specifications. Digital calibration is an inexpensive and effective solution. A novel digital calibration technique to improve charge pump current mismatch in frequency synthesizers is presented. This method detects the charge pump error by measuring the low pass filter voltage of the system forced to operate at a fixed phase error. A reference table developed by a mathematical model of the system uses the measurement to produce a digital control word. The digital control word acts on a charge pump array to correct the error. The technique was implemented and tested in Matlab/Simulink for a case study frequency synthesizer. The calibration technique corrected the charge pump design relative error to an average of 1.4%. The technique is exceptionally effective for correcting the charge pump current mismatch, always correcting the error to less than 1%

Radio-frequency (RF) integrated circuits in CMOS technology are gaining increasing popularity in the commercial world, and CMOS technology has become the dominant technology for applications such as GPS receivers, GSM cellular transceivers, wireless LAN, and wireless short-range personal area networks based on IEEE 802.15.1 (Bluetooth) or IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee) standards. Furthermore, the increasing interest in wireless technologies and the widespread of wireless communications has prompted an ever increasing demand for radio frequency transceivers. Wireless Radio-Frequency Standards and System Design: Advanced Techniques provides perspectives on radio-frequency circuit and systems design, covering recent topics and developments in the RF area. Exploring topics such as LNA linearization, behavioral modeling and co-simulation of analog and mixed-signal complex blocks for RF applications, integrated passive devices for RF-ICs and baseband design techniques and wireless standards, this is a comprehensive reference for students as well as practicing professionals.
