This volume is a tribute to the career of J. Brendan Murphy and features papers by over 100 authors from countries all over the world: a testament to the high-profile and far-reaching influence of Brendan’s work. The topics covered fall into three broad categories that encompass Brendan’s main fields of influence: (1) supercontinents and the supercontinent cycle, including reconstructions and modelling; (2) orogenesis and terranes, with a focus on the Appalachian–Variscan and Central Asian orogenic belts and the oceans with which they are associated; and (2) magmatism and magmatic processes, centring on the geochemistry and isotopic compositions of magmas in arc and rift setting. Like Brendan’s own research, the scope of the papers spans the globe and ranges from strongly field-based studies to conceptual analyses. All of the articles, however, are focused on unravelling some critical aspect of geology or aimed at clarifying some crucial geological process. Hence, they also share a theme common to Brendan’s many contributions in emphasizing the importance of process-oriented research.

"Madstones" is a new collection including six works of fantasy and science fiction, representing several different constructs — short stories, a stage play, a screenplay, and a prose poem. "Rama with the Ax," a short story, opens the collection, pitting a sinister stage magician, his undead assistant, and an alien god-beast from beyond time against a black man with a horn and his blues brothers. Who will win this bizarre battle of the bands? "Doom of the Autochthon" is a fantastic short story, set in another world, another time. If you've ever been inclined to be angry at the sun, this one is for you. Corruption and Empire were never like this before! "Retro Beach Party" is a screenplay. Check out what happens to these otherwise perfectly normal college students when a bale of contraband washes ashore during spring break. And when extraterrestrials crash this shindig, things get really wild. Remember, it all comes from the sixties, kids. This one is a trip in time back to those halcyon days of yore, and a reminder of how hard it is to laugh in these times. "Hurdy-Gurdy Rondo" is a play in one act for the theater of the absurd. What do we really know about the past? We may know more as science marches onward. But not everybody sees these things the same way. Can't we all just...get along? "The Eidolon of Clay" is a prose poem with a historical setting, passing fleetingly into the realm of fantasy upon the finding of a forgotten piece of statuary. Times change, cherished ideas change, but the human heart? "The Hilbert Hotel," a short story, closes the collection. In it we learn along with our heroine that there are many infinities and that some are bigger than others, and what it actually takes to change the world. The answer may surprise you! "Madstones" will appeal to readers from eighteen to eighty who like imaginative fiction with wit as well as a sense of wonder. "Madstones" is six zircons in the rough, hair of the dog that bit you for the psyche.

This volume summarizes in 16 chapters the petroleum geology of the Békés basin with respect to its geological setting in the Pannonian Basin. The work was accomplished by a joint effort of the Hungarian Oil and Gas Co. and U.S. Geological Survey. In contrast with other books that discuss the geology of Hungary, this volume identifies, in detail, potential source rocks and reservoir rocks, and evaluates the maturation, generation, migration, and entrapment of hydrocarbons. The outstanding points are: (1) its summary of the petroleum geology of the Békés basin with respect to its structural and sedimentological setting in the Pannonian Basin; (2) the identification of geographic areas, structural trends and stratigraphic zones that remain relatively unexplored; and (3) a summary of `petroleum plays' with an assessment of their recoverable, undiscovered resources of oil and gas. This book is primarily for petroleum geologists interested in oil and gas exploration in Hungary, and earth scientists interested in the geology of the Pannonian Basin.

This book introduces the reader to the unique geology of Greece. This country is a natural geology laboratory that can help us understand the present-day active geodynamic processes in the Hellenic orogenic arc, including earthquakes, volcanoes, coastline changes and other processes of uplift and subsidence, as well as the intense erosion, transport and deposition of sediments. Additionally, Greece offers a remarkable geological museum, reflecting the complex history of the area over the last 300 million years. By studying the rocks of Greece, one can discover old oceanic basins, e.g. in the Northern Pindos and Othrys mountains, crystalline rocks of Palaeozoic age, old granitic and volcanic rocks, as well as other sedimentary rocks including fossils from the shallow neritic facies to pelagic and abyssal facies. The younger sediments demonstrate the continuously changing palaeogeography of Greece, with areas of lakes, high plateaus and gulfs that are transformed into new forms of islands, peninsulas or high mountains, etc. All the above subjects are included in the book, which describes the tectonic structure of the geological strata, together with the evolutionary stages of the palaeogeography and geodynamics within the broader Mediterranean context. A special characteristic of the book is the development of the orogenic model of the Hellenides with the application of the tectono-stratigraphic terrane concept in the Tethyan system.

The Caledonides are a major orogenic belt that stretches from the Arctic, through Scandinavia, East Greenland, Britain and Ireland into the Atlantic coast of North America. Following the break-up of Rodinia, the Caledonides formed in the Palaeozoic by the drifting of various continents and their eventual aggregation in the Silurian and Devonian. The orogen subsequently fragmented during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. This volume brings together 25 papers presenting the results of modern research that investigates the orogenic processes and the provenance of specific components of the belt. The contributions reflect different lines of research, linking traditional field studies with modern analytical techniques. In addition three overview papers summarize the main features of the belts in Scandinavia, Svalbard, East Greenland, Britain and Ireland, highlighting the advances made since the last major synthesis of the Scandinavian Caledonides 30 years ago, and discussing important open questions.
