Excerpt from Auto De Fé and Jew In the following chapters the writer has attempted to sketch the effect of the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal, more particularly in regard to the Crypto-Jews who came within its purview, and to collect data as to its outward expression, as evinced in the auto de fé. Lists have been compiled which set forth in chronological order the various autos which took place in Spain and Portugal and their American and Indian colonies since the establishment of the Holy Office, under Ferdinand and Isabella, until its final abolition, early in the nineteenth century. Though necessarily incomplete, these lists comprise nearly 2,000 autos de fé - a number far in excess of anything hitherto recorded - and they will serve, in some measure, as a reliable indication of inquisitional activity. It was at first contemplated to restrict the lists to such autos only as were known to have penanced Jews, but, as the manuscript and printed material accumulated, it was felt that the compilation would be more useful if it were made as complete as possible. Mohammedan, Lutheran, Philosopher, Mystic, and Freemason were, in turn, the peculiar objects of the heretic baiters, but there was no interval of any appreciable length during which there were not some Judaizers deemed worthy of punishment and persecution. Still it must not be assumed that at every auto de fé a Jew was butchered. Lea, the historian of the Inquisition, has in his epoch-making works thrown new light on the subject he has made bis own. Chapters IX to XXXVI are devoted to an examination, and partly a precis, of what he has written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Inquisition and Judaism: A Sermon Addressed to Jewish Martyrs, on the Occasion of an Auto Da Fe at Lisbon, 1705 On enquiring into the true motives that can possi bly induce Israelites to renounce the faith Of their fathers, we cannot divest ourselves of the suspicion that a craving for mundane honors, and an unruly ambition upon which religious sentiment holds no check, may have great weight with some men, and may lead them to prefer the momentary gratification wh ch the parade and circumstance of power confers, to the favor of the Supreme Being and the approbation of conscience. To attempt to argue with such un principled men, if such there be, would be utterly hopeless for little can the words of mortals avail with persons who are deaf to the voice of God and reckless Of their eternal bliss. Others, again, there are, whose abject poverty ren ders them Obnoxious to the pecuniary bait held out by the wily agents of the Society. We are hardly prepared to suggest a remedy in this case, indisposed as we are to attempt to bind men to their creed by mere worldly considerations: yet would we venture to urge on the consideration of the more Opulent bers of our community, the absolute necessity of taking a deep and lively interest in the condition of their poorer brethren, of ascertaining their mental and physical wants, and of endeavouring to protect them. Excerpt from Jewish Mythology, or the Coming of the Messiah Letter-signs were understood to be astronomically significant; which meant that the history of individuals and nations was written in the heavens, and that the fulfilment was all experienced on time, as those letter-signs came to earth by divisions of time, and applied to names of things on the surface of the earth. Letters, and figures designating numbers, were understood as having bearings on the heavens by law of quadrature. This gave all points of the compass and gravitation. On these bear ings, all letters, syllables, words, and compounds had, first, an earthly meaning which bear on their bodily lives. Then, by vowels and division by puns, the same vocal music accompanied them on as souls into the realms of the future, where the same signs were used but the pronunciation lost to earthly articulation. This arrangement of language in space, with the bearings given, was the Temple of the Jews. T ms was the way it was built without the sound of hammer. This temple was destroyed again and again, as the people of the Jewish nation refused to accept it, or, through ignorance, could not see anything in it. The man who built the temple for the Jews was understood to be the Messiah, without any regard to his name. The names were different at different epochs of time, because the heavenly sheet of sign arrangement, slowly revolving all the time, brought it about. Excerpt from Mordecai M. Noah's Discourse on the Restoration of the Jews: Republished in Extract With an Introductory Note Russia, with a steady glance and firm step, approaches Turkey in Europe, and when her railroads are completed to the Black Sea, will pour in her Cossacks from the Don and the Vistula, and Constantinople will be occupied by the descendants of the Tartar dynasty, and all Turkey in Europe, united to Greece, will con stitute either an independent empire, or be occupied by Russia who, with one arm on the Mediterranean, and the other on the North Sea, will nearly embrace all Europe. The counterbalance of this gigantic power will be a firm and liberal union of Austria with all Italy and the Roman States, down to the borders of Gaul: but the revolution will not end here. England must pos sess Egypt, as affording the only secure route to her possessions in India through the Red Sea; then Palestine, thus placed be tween the Russian possessions and Egypt, reverts to its legitimate proprietors, and for the safety of the surrounding nations, a powerful, wealthy, independent and enterprising people are placed there by and with the consent of the Christian powers, and with their aid and agency the land of Israel passes once more into the possession of the descendants of Abraham. The ports of the Mediterranean will be again opened to the busy hum of commerce; the fields will again bear the fruitful harvest, and the Christian and Jew will together, on Mount Zion, raise their voices in praise of Him whose covenant with Abraham was to en dure forever, and in whose seed all the nations of the earth are to be blessed. This is our destiny. Every attempt to colonize the Jews in other countries has failed; their eye has steadily rested on their own beloved Jerusalem, and they have said, The time will come, the promise will be fulfilled. The Jews in New Spain

The Jews in New Spain

Release: 1970
Genre: History
ISBN:

Mexico was a colony of Spain from 1521 to 1821 and was then known as New Spain. The colony encompassed all of modern Mexico, Central America, the Philippines, and the southwestern portion of the present United States. Within this territory, Jewish people who had immigrated from Europe, the Canary Islands, the Azores, and the Middle East carried on their tradition virtually surreptitiously for almost three centuries. From 1521 on the Jews inhabited the area without interruption but--except for a few decades--the did so illegally. They had material gains and high posts in their command and stood to lose all, including their lives, if discovered to be adherents of the law of Moses. The Mexican Jew of today is not the descendant of the Jews of colonial times; Mexican Jewish history after 1821 involves new people and new communities. The branches of the Spanish Inquisition that reached into New Spain from 1521 to 1851 left a vast legacy of documents that are priceless to the historian. The trial records reveal in meticulous detail the search for heretics and their punishment in dramatic autos-da-fé but. more significantly, unfold the panorama of their lives. Professor Liebman has researched and translated many of the Inquisition documents, and through these and other sources, has defined, described, and analyzed the personalities, lives and customs of representative Hispanic Jews. Two outstanding families, those of Luis de Carvajal and Thomas Treviño de Sobremonte, are treated in full in separate chapters. Other chapters trace the colonists from their departure from Spain through their centuries of faith and flame in the New World. -- Jacket.

"In this completely updated edition of Henry Kamen's classic survey of the Spanish Inquisition, the author incorporates the latest research in multiple languages to offer a new-and thought-provoking-view of this fascinating period. Kamen sets the notorious Christian tribunal into the broader context of Islamic and Jewish culture in the Mediterranean, reassesses its consequences for Jewish culture, measures its impact on Spain's intellectual life, and firmly rebuts a variety of myths and exaggerations that have distorted understandings of the Inquisition. He concludes with disturbing reflections on the impact of state security organizations in our own time"--

Excerpt from The Inquisition and Judaism: A Sermon Addressed to Jewish Martyrs, on the Occasion of an Auto Da Fe at Lisbon, 1705 In the following pages will be found a Sermon delivered by the Archbishop of Cranganor to a number of Israelites, hapless victims of the Inquisition, preparatory to the unhallowed celebration of an Auto da Fe. Of the unfortunate beings compelled to listen to the archbishop, a majority were under sentence of making their selection between Apostasy and Death, and one amongst the number, having offended a second time against the Inquisition, is, agreeably to all inference, irrevocably condemned to perish by the flames. And yet it is before such defenceless creatures, whose tongues are bridled, that the prelate affects a vast display of erudition; it is such unhappy men whom he assails with a verbose and diffuse harangue, professing to enter into a free and fair discussion on the merits of the respective creeds of Judaism and Christianity! Such a flagrant outrage on the unalienable rights of conscience - such a solemn farce, enacted in the name, and under the assumed sanction of the God of mercy and love - cannot fail to awaken in every humane and thinking mind sentiments of abhorrence and disgust.
