This volume examines ways in which service delivery to individuals with autism can be improved from both ends of the basic-applied research spectrum. It introduces the concept of translational scholarship and examines real-world value in developing relevant interventions. Each area of coverage reviews current findings on autism from basic research and, then, discusses the latest applied research literature to create a roadmap for researchers, clinicians, and scientist-practitioners to develop new, effective strategies as children, adolescents, and adults with autism continue to learn and grow. Featured coverage includes: Why practice needs science and how science informs practice. The social learning disorder of stimulus salience in autism. Assessment and treatment of problem behaviors associated with transitions. Understanding persistence and improving treatment through behavioral momentum theory. The behavioral economics of reinforcer value. Increasing tolerance for delay with children and adults with autism. Autism Service Delivery is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians and scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in the fields of developmental psychology, behavioral therapy, social work, clinical child and school psychology, occupational therapy, and speech pathology.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disability that affects millions of children and adults across the United States. Students diagnosed with ASD are often times placed in special education programs and given Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to provide them an appropriate education within the American public education system. This study seeks to identify the types of special education services students on the autism spectrum receive through the public school system, but more importantly, research the ways in which those services are delivered: either via district employed staff or via outside contract. Three Virginia school districts were selected for analysis and special education coordinators from each district were invited to participate in in-depth interviews about the district’s decision making process regarding the delivery of services for students with ASD. The study found that most districts deliver special education services using full-time staff, and that these decisions are largely based on student need and districts resources. The interview data also suggested some disagreement about whether services differ when provided by full-time staff versus outside contract, as well as highlighted the importance of district leadership in creating a supportive environment in which special education service delivery decisions are made. The findings will help educational researchers better understand district decision-making about service delivery for students with ASD and hopefully prompt future studies that expand upon the scope and limitations of this study.--Abstract

This book addresses the importance and relevance of interprofessional care coordination for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It covers the role of interprofessional collaborations across various settings for multiple service provision purposes. The volume examines interprofessional collaboration among professionals across such broad issues as screening, evaluation, intervention, and overall care management of ASD. In addition, the book explores more narrowly focused issues, such as providing transition services during early childhood and young adulthood, culturally responsive practice and advocacy issues for individuals with ASD from diverse backgrounds, and providing care for individuals with ASD and co-occurring trauma. Finally, the book concludes with the editors’ recommendations for future directions in interprofessional care for pediatric ASD. Topics featured in this book include: Autism screening tools and interdisciplinary coordination of the processes. Dell Children’s (S)TAAR Model of Early Autism Assessment. The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM). Transition from early schooling for youth with ASD. Postsecondary and vocational opportunities for youth with autism. Transitioning from pediatric to adult medical systems. International perspectives in coordinated care for individuals with ASD. Psychopharmacology of ASD. Interprofessional Care Coordination for Pediatric Autism Spectrum Disorder is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians and professionals, and graduate students in clinical child and school psychology, social work, behavioral therapy and related disciplines, including clinical medicine, clinical nursing, counseling, speech and language pathology, and special education.
