"They're fine once they're here, no need to worry." Advice from many educational professionals. "She doesn't look autistic." A friend's observation. "I don't think I could even score that low." A comment made by a professional in relation to a child's autism diagnosis. Just some of the many things that have been said to the parents of three amazing children - Mia, George and Finley. Follow James on his journey as a father, along with his wonderful wife Emily, as they fight for the future of their neurodiverse children. From the early years of parenthood to the present day, we see their perspectives change as they take on new roles as parent/carers. It's a journey that impacts their children, themselves, and the people immediately around them, as they advocate in ways they didn't know were possible. From a challenging diagnosis, battles with the education system and school avoidance, through to struggling with a father's own mental health, we learn how as parents, and as a family, they start to process the past events, accept their different paths in life and begin to find their tribe.

Although numerous studies have examined the phenomenon of autism, there is little research published for the professional providing the insight into the parenting experience of a father with an autistic child. The lack of research suggests that the father has been overlooked in regard to his personal experience. This current literature summarizes research findings regarding the challenges of parenting an autistic child. This study examines the father's experience of parenting an autistic child and how he feels this situation impacts his life and relationships. In addition to the literature review examining the challenges of and recommendations for parenting an autistic child, this study examines fatherhood as experienced by six (6) fathers of autistic children. The personal account given by the participants will provide information to guide practitioners toward a better understanding of the impact of parenting an autistic child from the father's perspective. Also, this study will present implications for future therapeutic intervention. A summary of the literature is presented, recommendations are made based on the results and the proposed need and value of future research is offered.

Fathers and mothers do not experience or handle parenting the same way. In the case of the ADHD child, for whom consistency is so important, differences in the way parents regard behavior, discipline, and ADHD itself often get in the way of their working effectively as a team. Clinical psychologist Edward H. Jacobs recognizes the needs and perspectives particular to fathers and he suggests how differences can be harnessed to strengthen and enrich the parenting team to benefit the ADHD child.

There are many books about Asperger's Syndrome and Autism. Many of the books I have read teach parents about symptoms and go into detail about the disability. My book will focus on several important issues such as temperament, sensory, social skills, evaluation, IEP, strategies, and transition services.I understand the concerns; frustrations and the overwhelming feelings parents have in finding resources for their children. This is a journey you will be on from the day they are diagnosed until they reach adulthood.
