Charlie O'Shields is the creator of Doodlewash®, founder of World Watercolor Month in July, and host of the Sketching Stuff podcast. Every single day, for over three years, he created a watercolor illustration and wrote a short essay about whatever came to mind that day and posted it on his blog. These are some of the collected favorites along with some brand new musings. With over 180 illustrations, this book is part personal memoir and sometimes just a randomly fun romp through the sillier bits of this crazy world we all inhabit. Written to take on the impossible task of inspiring creativity, unleashing your inner child, and instilling hope, it will, at the very least, make you smile and touch your heart.

A breathtaking debut about family secrets, a child with an amazing artistic talent, and a startling censorship controversy in a small, tension-filled Australian town. the story of a boy artist, a river town and its mysterious underworld Eleven-year-old Novi just wants to blend in - not easy when you're named after a silkworm and have the most eccentric family in town. A descendent of the first Italian silk growers in northern New South Wales, he is an obsessive artist with a habit of drawing the stories of the people around him, and a secret conviction that the river murdered his grandfather. Young teacher Dom Best is new in town and must overcome his lack of confidence to support Novi's talent. together with Camille, the enigmatic school librarian, Dom encourages the boy to release his inhibitions and unravel his unusual family history through his art- though little can he imagine the consequences this will bring. Watercolours is a poignant debut novel with a mystery at its heart, an unexpected love story and a surprising twist. Most of all, it celebrates the clarity and colour a child's-eye view brings to the adult world. 'A stunner. It's note-perfect and the control of the shifting points of view is incredibly skillful. the descriptions of Novi's painting and his way of seeing the world are gut-wrenching. It's a really fine novel' MALCOLM KNOX

As a teacher of watercolor painting for over 50 years, Rae Andrews has had the privilege of watching students grow in their artistic journeys. Many beginning artists are pushing to adopt a style before they learn the basics, such as drawing and color mixing. Rae doesn't believe any new artist should be in such a rush to develop a style. That will come over time and with practice. Rae is a colorist and loves design. Hence, her paintings tend to have a different look that often surprises the viewers. She's discovered that color and a dramatic choice of value help stimulate the eye and individualize her work. This book contains 10 watercolor demonstrations that showcase the different approaches Rae uses in her paintings. She expects her students to experiment with their own color theory and compositional alternatives by drawing often and trying different subjects. Not every demonstration will resonate with every student, however, the many approaches and techniques that Rae has demonstrated should certainly give any artist more creative options to develop the look they want in their paintings. Watercolor is such a spontaneous medium, full of surprises and sometimes messes, or 'stinkers', as Rae calls them. She advises students to explore the many exciting properties and find their way to keep that magical discovery alive. Rae's motto is: "Dare to be different and above all, have fun!"

Following from 'The Ultimate Mixing Palette: a World of Colours', which explored two-colour mixing using a 15-colour palette, this book looks at working with watercolour triads. The book shows triad wheels and charts for a range of triads, with sample paintings and sketches showing the triads in action. The triads are cross-referenced with mixes in the previous book.

This comprehensive survey uniquely covers both Aboriginal art and that of European Australians, providing a revealing examination of the interaction between the two. Painting, bark art, photography, rock art, sculpture, and the decorative arts are all fully explored to present the rich texture of Australian art traditions. Well-known artists such as Margaret Preston, Rover Thomas, and Sidney Nolan are all discussed, as are the natural history illustrators, Aboriginal draughtsmen, and pastellists, whose work is only now being brought to light by new research. Taking the European colonization of the continent in 1788 as his starting point, Sayers highlights important issues concerning colonial art and women artists in this fascinating new story of Australian art.
