Australia is one of the most ethnically diverse societies in the world today. From its ancient indigenous origins to British colonisation followed by waves of European then international migration in the twentieth century, the island continent is home to people from all over the globe. Each new wave of settlers has had a profound impact on Australian society and culture. The Australian People documents the dramatic history of Australian settlement and describes the rich ethnic and cultural inheritance of the nation through the contributions of its people. It is one of the largest reference works of its kind, with approximately 250 expert contributors and almost one million words. Illustrated in colour and black and white, the book is both a comprehensive encyclopedia and a survey of the controversial debates about citizenship and multiculturalism now that Australia has attained the centenary of its federation.

Through oral histories, memoirs, and Facebook posts of Vietnamese adults who entered Australia as children after the Vietnam War (and Vietnamese refugees, war orphans, and children of refugees) this book provides insight into the memories of forced migrant childhoods and histories, as well as the complexities of national and transnational identity and belonging in digital diaspora. As war and displacement compounds the need for creating communities and histories for cultural continuity, this book is a history about childhood and migration for the Vietnamese diaspora of refugees, adoptees, and second generation in Australia and their connectedness to a global and digital diaspora. Using Facebook as a digital archive for historical research, Vietnamese Migrants in Australia and the Global Digital Diaspora presents new methods for the study of what Nguyen Austen proposes as a new area of digital diaspora studies for interdisciplinary research about real and digital life in the humanities and social sciences. As a contemporary digital diaspora study of Vietnamese forced child migrants from 1975 to the present, this book contains a mixed-methods historical analysis of the impact of war and displacement on memories of childhood. This book presents an innovative history of the national, transnational, digital, and contemporaneous lives of Vietnamese child migrants, which will make a significant contribution to the discourse on transnational childhood, migration, and belonging for refugees and migrants in the twenty-first century.

This book examines Australia's immigration programme with particular emphasis on refugees. It is based on papers presented at the seminar on "Australia's Immigration Responsibilities" (Melbourne, February 1979) The aim of the editors is to clarify differences of attitude in Australia towards immigration, and indicate ethical and sociological premises upon which the differences are based. The book is divided into three sections: the first is based on the seminar discussions; the second further develops the issues raised in the first section; and the third deals with background issues, and the views of the Government and the Opposition on policy implications. The specific chapters dealing with refugees include: "Australia's Immigration Policy and Refugees", "Family Reunion and the Refugees Crisis", "Family Reunion and Refugees" and "Population, Immigration and the Domestic Market, and Indochinese Refugees". The editors conclude that, considering the current unemployment situation and the absence of proper manpower programmes, there is no good case for recruiting immigrants to fill alleged gaps in the workforce. They also conclude that the system of selection of immigrants does not meet effectively any of the varying priorities. They recommend, for strong humanitarian reasons, giving priority to refugees and family reunion cases; and, in addition, discontinuing the arrangement whereby New Zealand citizens have a free right of entry and settlement.

The "Asian migration" controversy of the 1980s in Australia was reminiscent of that a century earlier. However, as this first major study of the "new" Asian migration of the 1980s illustrates, the circumstances and characteristics have been vastly different. The study places Asian immigration in a broader international context in which the emigration to Australia is part of a wider pattern of population movements with diplomatic ramifications and economic implications for both Australia and the emigrants' homeland. This study provides key Australian comparative data to set against the extensive Asian emigration in the 1980s to USA, Canada and New Zealand

Protection challenges around the globe require innovative legal, policy and practical responses. Drawing primarily from a new generation of researchers in the field of refugee law, this volume explores the ‘boundaries’ of refugee law. On the one hand, it ascertains the scope of the legal provisions by highlighting new trends in State practice and analysing the jurisprudence of international human rights bodies, as well as national and international Courts. On the other hand, it marks the boundaries of refugee law as ‘legal frontiers’ whilst exploring new approaches and new frameworks that are necessary in order to address the emerging protection challenges.
