200 Years ago a Philadelphia newspaper claimed George Washington wasn't the "father of his country." It claimed John Adams really wanted to be king. Its editors were arrested by the federal government. One editor died awaiting trial. The story of this newspaper is the story of America. THE AMERICAN HISTORY WE WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO KNOW In this monumental story of two newspaper editors whom Presidents Washington and Adams sought to jail for sedition, American Aurora offers a new and heretical vision of this nation's beginnings, from the vantage point of those who fought in the American Revolution to create a democracy--and lost.

At the dawn of the nineteenth century, resourceful pioneers carved a small community out of the wilderness in far western New York State. An agent of the Holland Company opened the way by surveying a road from Big Tree Indian Reservation to Lake Erie in 1803. One mile section of that road today is Main Street, East Aurora. A year later, a man named Jabez Warren obtained a contract for 1,443 acres of land, which makes up a large part of the Town of Aurora. The earliest settlers arrived, cleared the forests, farmed the land, harnessed the waterpower, and built mills. Their efforts and the richness of the land formed the foundation of a town that in years to come provided food and materials for the the city of Buffalo and nearby areas. Town of Aurora: 1818-1930, presents more than a century of the history of this vibrant community. It includes some notable people and places. In the spring of 1823, young attorney Millard Fillmore opened the first law office in town--twenty-seven years before he became the nation's thirteenth president. In 1832, Aurora Academy, the most celebrated institution of learning in western New York, was incorporated. By the 1890s, Hamlin Village Farm, and Jewett's Stock Farm were world famous for the breeding of harness race horses. In 1895, Elbert Hubbard established the arts and crafts community of the Roycrofters, which flourished into the 1930s.

Aurora Consurgens is a 15th century richly illuminated text in the alchemical tradition. Like a well-wrought puzzle it fuses Bible quotations with quotes from early alchemical texts to conjure up a beautiful rumination on the female figure of Wisdom. While described as beautiful, she wasn't flawless, weak, fearful, or subordinate. She was a strong, intelligent, free-willed, even fearsome creature who had all the knowledge of the world gathered inside. That Wisdom, that everything connected to knowledge and science is naturally a woman's domain appears to be an alien thought to us today. Yet, when we think of all the Wisdom deities like Athena, Saraswati, Benzaiten, Saga, etc. it once wasn't. The alchemists remind us of that in this magnificent text. This book combines an English translation of the Aurora with its traditional illustrations reimagined by artist Aviva Brueckner. In its color-in pages it leaves room to meditate upon the words while providing the world with its splendid shades."
